Attenuated Sri Lankan Squads for Pakistan Tour …. with Blessings from the PIRIT NULA

ONE: Sri Lankan Squad leave for Pakistan with Prot

Sri Lanka’s depleted national cricket squad left for Pakistan on Tuesday expressing confidence in security promises by the hosts despite reports that the team could be targeted by militants. The Sri Lanka team were attacked in Lahore in 2009. Since then most international teams have refused to tour the South Asian country, leaving Pakistan to play nearly all their “home” games in the United Arab Emirates.

Afghan Unique! Seven Successive Sixes in Seven Balls from Two Different Batsmen

A rather monotonous T20 international between Afghanistan and Zimbabwe was brought to life by Mohammad Nabi and Najibullah Zadran when they smashed seven consecutive sixes across the 17th and 18th overs in Dhaka on Saturday. It was the second match of the tri-series being played between Bangladesh, Zimbabwe and Afghanistan, which the latter ended up winning by 28 runs.

Afghanistan batted first and were ambling at 123/4 after 16 overs. Tendai Chatara bowled the 17th over with Nabi and Zardan in the middle and the pair took singles off the first two balls. Nabi, who recently retired from Test cricket after Afghanistan’s triumph over Bangladesh last week, started the carnage with a six over deep mid-wicket off the third ball of the over.

Nabi was dismissed off the last ball for 38 off 18 balls.

Andrew Fernando’s Reading of the Close Encounter at CapeTown

Andrew Fidel Fernando in ESPNcricinfo, 20 March 2019, with title “South Africa nearly choke, but Tahir rescues them in Super Over

Sri Lanka 134 for 7 (Kamindu 41, Phehlukwayo 3-25) tied with South Africa 134 for 8 (Miller 41, Malinga 2-11)

Super Over South Africa 14 for 0 beat Sri Lanka 5 for 0

Sri Lanka’s spinners squeezed and throttled and tugged down the opposition run rate in defence of a modest score, but it was the best slow bowler on show – Imran Tahir – who saw South Africa through a tense Super Over situation, and suggested that whatever his team-mates are like, he is capable of keeping his cool in tough circumstances.

Riveting and Bungling T20 at Cape Town on 19th March 2019

 Michael Roberts

Fortuitously I watched the thrilling match at Cape Town between Sri Lanka and South Africa on the 19th March – a game which ended in a tie and was resolved by a Super Over battle.

Miller run out via good throw from Kusal Mendis

The tense Super-Over competition is not my idea of thrill – simply not my scenario. For me that was not the high point of the match. It was the Saf collapse from 3 for 117 in the 17th over to 8 for 134 in over twenty (20) which ended the real contest in a TIE that captivated my interest – heightened as it was by Niroshan Dickwella’s failure to hit the stumps from two yards on the last ball. What a Howler!

Sri Lanka vs Safs T20 -A Preview

Liam Brickhill for ESPNcricinfo, 19 March 2019

Big Picture: Despite the change in format, the focus for both teams remains the swiftly-approaching fifty-over World Cup. South Africa made as much clear by naming the same squad for the first T20I as that chosen for the ODIs just past, with national selector Linda Zondi stating that Cricket South Africa regard the match as another step towards the completion of ‘Vision 2019’, their grand plan for World Cup success.

When Channel Nine was castigated in January 2018

Sam Duncan, Sydney Morning Herald6 January 2018, where the title ran “C’mon, Channel Nine’s cricket commentary isn’t as bad as everybody is saying”

Channel Nine’s coverage of cricket has been copping it from all angles this summer.  Cricket viewers and media commentators alike have lined up to stick the boots in, labelling it everything from outdated, stale and boring to too matey and chummy. Many fans reckon there’s far too much banter from the Nine commentators about their careers from the “good ol’ days” at the expense of insightful analysis about what’s happening on the field. On the flip side, Channel Ten’s Big Bash commentary has been seen as cutting edge, punchy, informative and entertaining.
