Sri Lanka have lost 16 of their last 18 international matches, so there are rumours floating around about replacing the coach again. Rumours that Sri Lanka Cricket has inquired about the availability of top coaches overseas. That the island’s sports ministry – essentially running cricket in the country at present – has consulted lawyers about the legal ramifications of firing or demoting Chandika Hathurusingha. Perhaps they will remove him from the national side and send him to the High Performance Centre. This is what they have just meted out to batting coach Thilan Samaraweera, who was replaced in the national set-up in December.

The SL cricket team’s collapse at Brisbane has produced severe condemnation by patriots on Facebook –patriots who clearly do not know much about cricket. Well before the match commenced it was my expectation that Australia would win by an innings because Brisbane is a bouncy pacey pitch and because the pink ball is in use over day and night.

A fuming Shane Warne slammed the Australian selectors after the One-day International (ODI) squad for the upcoming three-match series against India was announced on Friday. The selectors axed five players — Travis Head, Chris Lynn, D’Arcy Short, Ben McDermott and all-rounder Ashton Agar — on basis of current form. Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins were rested for the limited-over series while Nathan Lyon, Usman Khawaja and veteran Peter Siddle were brought back into the ODI setup.

Is Graeme Labrooy going to be Displaced as Chairman of Selectors?

Graeme Labrooy, the incompetent chairman of selectors of Sri Lanka Cricket Board (SLC), is likely to be sacked after the conclusion of the England series, Cricket Age reliably learns. Sri Lanka have already lost ODI, T20 and test trophies against England and the third test begins today. “Yes. Discussions are going on to replace Labrooy. We will be able to come to the conclusion only after the ongoing series” a top SLC Official told Cricket Age. When further inquired, Cricket Age learnt that the Sports Minister Faizer Mustapha has already given the node to sack Labrooy. Moreover, former Sri Lanka player Ashantha  De Mel’s name has been proposed to replace Labrooy.

At one stage, it would not have been a surprise to see the Mad Hatter, the White Rabbit or the March Hare on stage. In nearly three decades of involvement in Ashes cricket, I cannot recall witnessing a more bizarre post-match circus than that which presented itself after the conclusion of the Gabba Test.

When Gamini Dissamayake returned to the island after securing Sri Lanka’s entry into the top tier of cricket under the ICC in mid 1981 a reception party had been arranged at the Katunayake airport with some young cricketers also on parade. It is typical of Percy’ Abeysekera that he was there –with his standard symbol, the Sri Lankan flag …. It is with sadness that I note that the young cricketer on the extreme right is Sujeewa Kamalasuriya of Ananda and Adelaide who was swamped to death by the tsunami at Unawatuna on 26th December 2004.tsunami.
