Long Injury List demands Patchwork Selections in Sri Lanka’s Bowling Line-Up

Sa’adi Thawfeeq, in ESPNcricinfo, where the title is Injuries force Test-by-Test Sri Lanka squad selection”

Given Sri Lanka’s growing injury concerns, the national selectors will pick a squad ahead of each Test for their upcoming three-match series against Australia, which begins on July 26. Chief selector Sanath Jayasuriya and co-selectors Romesh Kaluwitharana, Eric Upashantha and Ranjith Madurusinghe face a dearth of fast-bowling options after injuries to several first XI players. Dhammika Prasad‘s shoulder injury is likely to keep him out of the Test series, while Dushmantha Chameera and Suranga Lakmal, who will undergo a fitness test on Monday for a hamstring strain, will be assessed later. Shaminda Eranga’s suspect action leaves Nuwan Pradeep as the only seamer available for selection from the recent tour of England.

Rangana Herath gains his Due at Last

Rex Clementine, courtesy of The Island, 20 May 2016, where the title is Herath – Sri Lankan cricket’s most loyal man”

How many of you knew that Rangana Herath made his Test debut before former great Kumar Sangakkara? Herath debuted aged just 21 when the Steve Waugh’s Australians toured the island in 1999 in Galle. In a rain affected game, the Australians batted just once and Herath picked up four wickets for 97. Despite a promising start, opportunities were few and rare for Herath due to the presence of champion spinner Muttiah Muralitharan. Sri Lanka also had in their line-up all-rounder Sanath Jayasuriya, who bowled left-arm spin as well and an overdose of spin wasn’t required.

Clementine, Fernando and Jayasuriya’s Thoughts on the Sri Lankan Squad and England Tour

I. Rex Clementine: “United Sri Lanka geared up for bigger challenges,” in Island, 3 May 2016

Aftermath of the national cricket team’s disastrous World T-20 campaign in India, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has taken several measures to help the team get back to winning ways and although there’s not much optimism, an improved performance is expected as Angelo Mathews’ side take wings to England today. Under new Chairman of Selectors Sanath Jayasuriya and Team Manager Charith Senanayake, certain initiatives were taken with the supervision of Head Coach Graham Ford to help the team raise their game in England and authorities are hopeful that the team will come up with an improved performance.

Leading up to the World T-20, there were infighting between senior players and captain Lasith Malinga had allegedly stopped talking to Dinesh Chandimal and Lahiru Thirimanne. One of the things that the new management has worked on is to help the players gel together and although a lot is left to be done, several good initiatives have been made. Continue reading

Achchaaaru, Mallun and Mayhem in the Selection Process at Sri Lanka Cricket

Sa’adi Thawfeeq, courtesy of the Daily News, 8 March 2016,where the title is “Chaos at SLC over selection policy”

On the eve of the Sri Lanka cricket team’s departure to the ICC World Twenty20 in India tonight mayhem and confusion over selection differences has arisen between Sri Lanka Cricket administrators and the current national selectors. There was further speculation that the Sports Minister has changed the current set of selectors and a new selection committee has been appointed yesterday night to make whatever changes that needs to be done to the already picked squad of 15.

As to how a new selection committee can make changes or pick a squad for a T20 World Cup without any sort of knowledge and in-depth study on the players’ performance is questionable. Continue reading

No-Balling Murali: Emerson seeks the Limelight Again

Simon King caters to Emerson and media-sensationalism by letting Emerson and gossip reign, in a piece in The Weekend Australian entitled “Emerson reflects on Muralidaran and no-ball controversy”. The coloured emphases in this version are editorial highlights.

arjuna

Seventeen years ago to the day, standing at square leg during the 1999 one-day series between Sri Lanka and England at the Adelaide Oval, umpire Ross Emerson no-balled Muttiah Muralidaran for chucking. There had been an ominous air of expectation as Murali took the ball in the 18th over — Emerson had called him before during the 1995-96 tour. Channel’s Nine’s Tony Greig set the mood: “Right, well this is the moment everyone’s been a little bit nervous about, we’ve got Muralidaran about to be introduced into the attack. These two umpires when they were together both no-balled him for throwing, umpire Emerson, he started it last time.” Continue reading

Profound Thoughts on Kumar Sangakkara as Cricketer and Thoughtful Man

Harendra Alwis, courtesy of Groundviews, 24August 2015, where the title reads “Kumar Sangakkara: The greatest hero of our time” … in blue to match his image:kumar glances

The Cricketing world will pause for a moment, to celebrate the legendary career of Kumar Sangakkara that draws to a close, and then move on; a bit richer for the legacy he leaves behind, for the standards he raised, expectations he upheld and for his story being entwined with the story of Cricket. He has already confirmed his place among the greatest test batsmen the game has ever seen. Continue reading

Kumar: Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow –Q and A with Rex

Rex Clementine in Q and A with Kumar Sangakkara, in The Island, 12 August 2015,where the title is Sanga on cricket and life after cricket”

article_image

The curtains will come down on Kumar Sangakkara’s illustrious Test career following the second Test Match against India at P. Sara Oval. The star batsman is the highest run getter (12,305) among those still playing while his batting average of 58:03 is significantly higher than several modern greats like Sachin Tendulkar (53:78), Brian Lara (52:88), Rahul Dravid (52:31) and Ricky Ponting (51:85). The 37-year-old, who returned home on Friday after his stint with English county Surrey, spoke to journalists here in Galle on the eve of the first Test on a host of subjects.

Question: What’s the reason for you to play only two Test Matches?

Kumar Sangakkara: The reason for the two and two Test split even though it is not ideal was the agreement I had with the previous selection committee when I was discussing my future. I had plans to retire immediately after the World Cup but they wanted me to try and play a bit more Test cricket. This was all I could offer them and I said as long as they were okay and the board was okay, I will be willing to play four more Test matches. They were ok with that and I said if they were not, to tell me that that would be fine. And that I can then retire after the World Cup. That’s why it’s a two and two split. Continue reading
