Sri Lanka A mauled by Malan and England A

ECB Reporters Network, 21 July 2016, where the title is “Malan 185* leads Lions rout of Sri Lanka A”

Dawid Malan rewrote the record books as England Lions made it two wins out of two in the 50-over Tri-Series by crushing Sri Lanka A in Northampton as comfortably as they had beaten Pakistan A in the opener in Cheltenham on Tuesday. Malan, who is leading the Lions for the first time in this series after his impressive performances in the winter, struck an unbeaten 185 from 126 balls with 16 fours and eight sixes – a new record for the Lions or England A in List A cricket, beating 168 by Ravi Bopara against West Indies A in Worcester in 2010.MALAN Continue reading

Long Injury List demands Patchwork Selections in Sri Lanka’s Bowling Line-Up

Sa’adi Thawfeeq, in ESPNcricinfo, where the title is Injuries force Test-by-Test Sri Lanka squad selection”

Given Sri Lanka’s growing injury concerns, the national selectors will pick a squad ahead of each Test for their upcoming three-match series against Australia, which begins on July 26. Chief selector Sanath Jayasuriya and co-selectors Romesh Kaluwitharana, Eric Upashantha and Ranjith Madurusinghe face a dearth of fast-bowling options after injuries to several first XI players. Dhammika Prasad‘s shoulder injury is likely to keep him out of the Test series, while Dushmantha Chameera and Suranga Lakmal, who will undergo a fitness test on Monday for a hamstring strain, will be assessed later. Shaminda Eranga’s suspect action leaves Nuwan Pradeep as the only seamer available for selection from the recent tour of England.

A Strategic Plan to stabilise Sri Lanka’s Cricketing Dispensation

Sidath Wettimuny & Prasanna Jayawardena

This scheme of reform was formulated by Sidath Wettimuny and his Interim Committtee way back in October/November 2015 about two months before their term  was over. Sidath  received guidance from Prasanna Jayawardena, an eminent lawyer (PC). It is based on studies of the South African and Irish constitutions which were recommended by the ICC (to Sidath) as a good basis for a new constitution.  Sidath spoke to both Presidents of those respective countries while he was at the ICC meetings and got their views.It was presented to  Ranil Wickremasinghe and his Sports Minister, Dayasiri Jayasekera (according to the Sunday Times, 17 July 2016). It appears to have been pigeon holed.

SIDATH Sidath hqdefaultPrasanna

THE PURPOSE OF THIS CONCEPT PAPER:

  • Why Sri Lanka Cricket [“SLC”] should be reformed;
  • The present structure of SLC;
  • Recommend the manner of achieving the necessary reforms by: (a) incorporating SLC [which is presently an Unincorporated Association]; (b) introducing a better electoral process; and (c) improving the management structure of SLC.

Aiyyo! Aiyyo! Don’t Cry for Me, Asgiriya

Aubrey Kuruppu in the Sunday Times, 17 July 2016

ASGIRIYALargely unwept and unsung, the Asgiriya Stadium has passed into obscurity as a Test centre. Starting with the Test against Greg Chappell’s Australians in April 1983, up to the Test against England in December 2007, 22 matches have been played there. The ground has a certain quaintness and old world charm about it. However, it had to yield place to modernity.  Australia’s 514-4 included big hundreds from Wessels (142) and Hookes (143 not out). Half-centuries from Yallop and Chappell (98 and 66) also helped in this marathon exercise at the world’s 54th Test venue. The combined spin of DS and Gunaratne eked out 1 for 206 in 61 overs.

Pakistan A overwhelm Sri Lanka A — A Remarkable Victory

ESPNcricinfo Report

Pakistan A swept to a remarkable eight-wicket win over Sri Lanka A in Worcester, riding on the back of belligerent half-centuries from captain Babar Azam and Saud Shakeel to mow down a target of 148 in 19.1 overs, with time running out on the final day. With a maximum of 23 overs to chase down the target, Pakistan went for the win right from the outset. They were reduced to 37 for 2 in the fifth over as Sharjeel Khan and Mohammad Nawaz both fell to new-ball bowler Vishwa Fernando in the quest for quick runs. But Azam (66 not out) and Shakeel (51 not out) then combined for an unbeaten partnership of 111 off 86 balls, hitting eight fours and three sixes between them to complete a thrilling chase.
