India Squeezes Lanka in Under 19 Final of Asia Cup

Half-centuries from opener Himanshu Rana and No. 3 Shubman Gill provided India Under-19s with a total of 273, which they were able to defend successfully thanks a middle-overs squeeze by their spinners Abhishek Sharma and Rahul Chahar. In the end, hosts Sri Lanka were beaten by 34 runs. At one point though, that result had seemed unlikely. With the momentum of picking up six wickets in the last 11 overs fuelling them, Sri Lanka went after the target with great vigour. Captain Kamindu Mendis and R Kelly struck fifties each to take the score to 158 for 2 in the 31st over. That brought the equation down to 116 off 118 balls with eight wickets in hand.

An Unique Event: The Royal College Tour of Australia in 1936

The Royal College First Eleven Cricket Team tour of Australia under the captaincy of Ryle de Soysa in 1936 has a unique place in world cricket History. It was the first cricket team from an Asian country to visit Australia (at whatever the level of cricket). I wrote this article based on research gleaned mainly from the memoirs of Lucien de Zoysa entitled ‘ My First Love’. It was written over 22 years ago (in 1993) and published in the Sunday Observer (May 2, 1993) on the day which had as its main item of news the assassination of President R. Premadasa (on May 01, 1993, while walking in a May Day procession). The Editor of the ‘Sunday Observer’ then was the well-known Journalist H.L.D. Mahindapala.

An English Assessment of Sri Lanka Under 19 Team’s Second Victory

Sri Lanka held their nerve to claim the Royal London Under-19 one-day series with one match to spare after a tense finish in Chelmsford. The tourists, who had won the first match of the series comfortably in Wormsley last Wednesday, seemed to be cruising again at 229 for three in the 36th over, after England had posted 315 for 8. But the dismissal of their opener Avishka Fernando for an excellent 117, run out by a direct hit from Somerset’s offspinner Dom Bess who was again the pick of England’s bowlers, breathed fresh life into the contest.

Roy Dias’ Hopes for Sri Lanka’s Under 19 Cricket

Sri Lanka Under-19 coach Roy Dias believes that experience will be vital heading into the 2018 Under-19 World Cup in New Zealand, and this has played a hand in the selection of the current U-19 squad that is playing a home series against South Africa U-19. Four players in the squad for the South Africa Youth Test series – Avishka Fernando, Shammu Ashan, Vishad Randika and Damitha Silva – participated in the 2016 U-19 World Cup but will not qualify for 2018 edition. Dias, however, said their experience was needed to help the younger players develop.

“There are about four experienced guys; other than that the rest are all playing for the first time at Under-19 international level,” Dias said. “They are quite good; you have to expose them and give them more matches and see how they perform. Continue reading →

The U19 Provincial Champions emerge from the North-West

North Western Province U19 emerged 2016 U19 Inter-Provincial Champions when they clinched a first-innings win over Southern Province in the three-day final ended in a draw at R.Premadasaon Friday. It, in the end became a tremendous victory for NWP as the teams they overcame on their way to this title especially the three teams competed from Western Province and unbeaten Southerners had highly talented player-compositions in their contingents.

Finalists and Future Prospects identified at Under 19 Provincial Tournament

Sri Lanka Cricket’s Rs. 26 million Super under 19 provincial tournament reaches its climax when Southern Province meets North Western Province in the three-day final at the R Premadasa Stadium from tomorrow (Wednesday). The final originally scheduled to commence today was postponed by a day in order to give the two finalists recovery time before they confront each other over three days. The group matches were played over two days.
