Mahela and Adil to play for Strikers in Big Bash League

AD STRIKERS 1 SACA and the ADELAIDE STRIKERS coined these capsule sketches for the two imports

AD STRIKERS MAHELAReplacing a player of the calibre of Kieron Pollard is a difficult task, but that’s exactly what the Strikers have done in signing of Sri Lankan legend Mahela Jayawardena. The former national captain has played over 600 international matches, and is widely regarded as one of modern cricket’s greatest-ever players. Averaging an incredible 62.25 for the Central Stags in New Zealand’s domestic T20 competition, Strikers fans need not be concerned about there being any rust during Jayawardena’s first couple of matches. His leadership will also be a significant boost for some of the Strikers’ younger playersContinue reading

Sri Lanka’s Practice Match buried deep

Courtesy of ESPNcricinfo  ……..http://www.espncricinfo.com/new-zealand-v-sri-lanka-2015-16/content/story/948869.html……. in one of the few accounts available over the past few days … without any scorecard being made available anywhere at any point of time …. a tale of second class treatment for a compatriot ex-colonial country

The Sri Lankans’ bowlers let the NZC President’s XI’s eighth-wicket partnership plunder 124 runs, but batted marginally better than in the first innings to secure a draw in the three-day warm up game in Queenstown. The hosts took a 206-run lead before declaring and the Sri Lankans then moved to 226 for 6 by stumps. A 153-ball 63 from opener Udara Jayasundera led the Sri Lankans’ innings, and heightened his chances of a debut in the first Test against New Zealand next Thursday. He struck up a 108-run partnership with Kithuruwan Vithanage, who hit 61 off 109 himself. Angelo Mathews made an unbeaten 54, while Dinesh Chandimal collected 29. Kusal Perera and Kusal Mendis were dismissed for low scores for the second time in the match.

Dropping catches at slip:  The bucket hands of Graeme Smith and Jacques Kallis left more than a year ago, but Dean Elgar, AB de Villiers and Faf du Plessis have been adequate replacements. Hashim Amla, though, who may see it as his duty as captain to station himself at slips, has not. Amla put down three catches in the India innings and South Africa were made to pay for two of them. When Kyle Abbott induced a thick edge off Rohit Sharma with a reverse-swinging ball, Amla should have taken it with both hands, but he spilled it. Dane Piedt later drew the edge from Ajinkya Rahane with a slider when was on 78, and Amla had to get low down to his left but again, with both hands to grasp the ball, he let it go. Rahane added 49 more runs to his score. Then, Abbott was left down again when Ashwin hung his bat outside offstump and the edged ball died on Amla. Ashwin was on 14 at the time, and went on to make 56. Continue reading

John Bull dissects Cricket for Yankee Doodle Dandie

S. N. Arseculeratne

I read somewhere that a game of cricket was played in New York. But no news after that. The reason may lie in the following story. An American asked an Englishman, (they who invented the game) to explain to him what this game is all about. The Englishman took another gulp of his beer and proceeded.

You have two sides, one out in the field

            And one in.

Each man that’s in the side that’s in, goes out

and when he’s out he comes in

and the next man goes in till he’s out.

When they are all out, the side that’s out comes in

and the side that has been in, goes out

and tries to get those coming in, out.

Sometimes you get men still in and not out.

When both sides have been in and out including the not outs, that’s the end of the game

The American grabbed the Englishman’s beer mug and finished it

Beating Verbal Intimidation at its Own Game

They say honesty is the best policy and it proved to be an effective strategy for Black Caps debutant Mitchell Santner. An obvious target for the Australians when he walked out to bat for the first time in the day-night pink ball test in Adelaide, Santner provided the perfect simple response to the inevitable sledging. “(Nathan) Lyon asked straight away, ‘Are you nervous?'” Santner told Radio Sport earlier this week. “I was like, ‘Ah yeah,’ and that stopped the (conversation).”

Santner’s tactics worked perfectly. He went on to be New Zealand’s top run scorer in the match with knocks of 31 and 45. And his response joins the list of memorable comebacks to sledges in world cricket.

Cementing Dominance — Catches win Matches

Ishant Sharma takes a magnificent running catch to dismiss AB de Villiers … made a difference did it? A little. but it was the Indian spin attack on a dicey pitch that was the telling factor on top of tow fighting innings by Rahane and Ashwin …. ah … a fightback assisted by poor catching on the Saf side, especially Amla’s  sitter at first slip off Ashwin early in the latter’s innings.

Andrew Fernando on Sri Lanka’s Selections for the Kiwi Tour

Andrew Fidel Fernando, in ESPNcricinfo, 17 November 2015, where the title reads “Uncapped Jayasundera picked for Tests,”

Uncapped opener Udara Jayasundera and rookie legspinner Jeffrey Vandersay have been selected in Sri Lanka’s Test squad for the tour of New Zealand. The 15-man squad, which features three spinners, four quicks and eight batsmen, has no room for opener Kaushal Silva and offspinner Tharindu Kaushal. Batsman Lahiru Thirimanne was also dropped from the squad altogether, after a being left out of Sri Lanka’s most recent Test, against West Indies. Kusal Mendis, the 20-year old wicketkeeper-batsman who took Thirimanne’s place in Colombo, was included again. Kithuruwan Vithanage also made a return to the Test squad, following good outings with Sri Lanka A in New Zealand last month.
