How England bested Sri Lanka: Seizing the Moments

Rohan Wijeyaratna, Island, 28 November 2018, where the title is “Playing the bigger moments better……”

When attendant scribes finally sit down to write on this English tour outside the cricket in retrospect, not much would be written complimentarily, given what happened to some members of the Barmy Army – the travelling supporters of the England team. The manner in which some were denied their pre-booked hotel rooms – thanks to some panic stricken match organisers – will feature high in what now seems an utterly ill-managed and ill-executed aspect of the tour. The stink it would earn this country will only be eclipsed by the larger stink generated through the uncouth political wrangling and totally unacceptable behaviour, never seen in the annals of any civilized society anywhere, this century. The damage in both instances would take long years to mend, and it will take a lot out of many, to offset the negative publicity the country has attracted. It would also sting an already sensitive tourist industry beyond its threshold of pain. What happened to these Barmy army men was no hiccup. But adding insult to injury, not even a cursory apology was forthcoming. Feelings were ruffled, people seriously inconvenienced, and to complete the misery, the host team was handed a complete ‘whitewash’ for their trouble. Much work will now have to be done to control the damage, but for the repair processes to begin, the country must first return back to normal. At the time of writing, normalcy seems nowhere in sight.

Errol Fernando’s Cricketing Delights This Week

Errol Fernando’s EMAIL NOTE to pals, 28 November 2018

I have enjoyed 3 contests – 4 if you include the Aussie ladies winning the World Cup against England which was extremely praiseworthy.

England  men won the 3rd Test against Sri Lanka despite a wonderful last wicket stand between numbers ten and eleven. Well done England winning 3-nil.

Pakistan levelled the series 1-1 against New Zealand 5 minutes ago. Yasir Shah took 14 wickets, equalling the 14 – wicket record of Imran Khan. When making his Man of the Match speech Yasir began by giving thanks to Allah.  When Shane Warne made his many MOM speeches. D o you recall whom he gave thanks to ??

Finally, Kohli won the third match against Australia, levelling the series 1-1. Everyone is expecting the Aussies to be thrashed  in the Test matches by Kohli’s Indians. However,I am not so sure about this. The Aussies have a fearsome bowling attack and I am not at all convinced by the Indian attack. It will not be a one-sided series.

Main Reason for Sri Lankan Defeats? Sa’adi challenges Lakmal’s Reasoning

Sa’adi Thawfeeq, in Daily News, 23  November 2018, where the title reads Lakmal blames spinners for defeats when batsmen have failed”

In the first two Tests of the ongoing three-Test series it is clear as day that it is the Sri Lankan batting that has been the downfall of the team who find themselves trailing 0-2 in the series and having a fight on their hands to prevent England from completing a 3-0 whitewash by winning the third and final Test starting at the SSC grounds from today. However acting captain Suranga Lakmal was of the view that it was the spinners who had contributed largely to the two defeats. “When we’ve play in Sri Lanka, our strength has been our spinners. Unfortunately in the last two games we didn’t get as many wickets from the spinners as quickly as we expected. The England batsmen played them really well. If we had bowled a little better we would have been able to win those two Tests. Everyone tries to stick to their strengths playing at home and for us it is our spinners,” said Lakmal at the pre-match press conference held at the SSC yesterday.

The Sri Lankan Innings at Pallekelle

Andew Fidel Fernando, in ESPNcricinfo.com,

England 285 (Curran 64, Buttler 63, Dilruwan 4-61) and 0 for 0 (Leach 0*, Burns 0*) trail Sri Lanka 336 (Silva 85, Karunaratne 63, de Silva 59) by 46 runs
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details

A graceful Dhananjaya de Silva 59, and a watchful 63 from Dimuth Karunaratnegave the Sri Lanka innings some early substance, but both those turns were outshone by what was arguably the innings of the series so far – a resolute 85 from Roshen Silva that carried Sri Lanka 46 runs into the lead.

Almost as impressive as his score, and the 174 balls he batted, was the fact that he forged such fruitful partnerships with the tail, coaching them through the tough periods. The last three partnership in Sri Lanka’s innings were worth 125 – Roshen scoring 60 of those runs. Soon after Roshen had arrived, Sri Lanka had been six-down and still 120 runs behind. Given the extremely challenging nature of this surface, and the variety in England’s attack, it was a monumental recovery.

Day One of Galle Test Match elongs to Foakes

Andrew Fidel Fernando

Ben Foakes was largely in the team for his wicketkeeping. That, at least, was one of the arguments. But following a morning session in which England’s more highly rated batsmen tangled themselves up in aggressive strokes and left the side at 103 for 5, it was debutant Foakes whose steady hand raised them gradually out of the ditch they had been in at lunch.

Foakes used the crease, skipped out to meet the spinners, and he swept as well, but he did each of these in a much more measured fashion than the men who batted above him. Thanks to him, and the men who batted well in his company – Jos Buttler, Sam Curran and Adil Rashid – England can even claim to have grasped a position of strength in this match. A score of 321 for 8 at stumps on day one is not shabby, in a Galle Test. Foakes himself was not out, 13 runs short of what would be a plucky century in his first Test innings.

England have taken a Leaf from Sri Lanka’s Ranatunga Book

Tanya Aldred in The Spin,8 October 2018  where the title is “How Sri Lanka’s magical 1996 cocktail paved the way for Morgan’s men”

Echoes of Arjuna Ranatunga’s World Cup-winning blueprint – potent spinners, pinch-hitting openers, bucket loads of confidence – can be seen in the England ODI side today

As England and Sri Lanka prepare for the five-match one-day series starting on Wednesday in Dambulla, a warm-up of sorts for the World Cup now less than eight months away, it feels the right time to stumble backwards 22 years, to one of cricket’s greatest stories.

On 17 March 1996, in the sultry atmosphere of Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium, Arjuna Ranatunga, Sri Lanka’s captain, lifted the World Cup high into the air. No one could quite believe it. Sri Lanka, the baby brother of the Asian block, the international whipping boys, had popped out of the hat, brandishing a party popper, a grin and a new kick-ass way of playing the game.

Item in Cricket Age,  4 September 2018,

Sachin Tendulkar has paid tribute to former England captain Alastair Cook, who announced his retirement from international cricket on Monday. “#AlastairCook has been one of the finest batsmen to have represented @ECB_cricket, and his conduct on-field and off it, has been impeccable,” said Tendulkar in his tweet. Tendulkar is just one of many current and former cricketers who have paid tribute to Cook, who will play his final Test, his 161st, at the Oval starting on September 7.
