Classic Shots: When Waugh and Gillespie clashed and broke their bones

Jayawardena survived with his score on 34 but the two fielders were taken to hospital with Gillespie rushed on a stretcher with a broken leg and Waugh with an injured nose. The incident occurred at Asgiriya in Kandy. The injuries were serious. Waugh’s nose had been driven in– a few centimetres more and he would have been dead.  Sanath Jaysuriuya phoned a pal in the SL Air Force and they sent a helicopter to Bogambara playing fields so that the two injured cricketers could be air-lifted to hospital in Colombo
