DAVID Warner’s giant Kaboom bat could be turned in to a mere “Kaboo” when cricket laws are changed to reduce their size next year. Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting, as part of the MCC World Cricket Committee, has formally proposed limits to bat thicknesses after watching willow-wielders whack attacks too easily
Ponting’s group want the MCC main committee, which governs the Laws of the Game, to approve a limit to bat edges of 40mm and depths of 67mm, which would come in to force from next October.

The MCC has confirmed that umpires will have the authority to send players off for serious breaches of behaviour under updated laws of the game which will be used from October 1, 2017. They have also laid out the restrictions on bat sizes and there will be an amendment to the run out law to protect a batsman whose bat has bounced in the air once they have crossed the popping crease.
These new laws follow the recommendations of the MCC Cricket Committee from their meeting in Mumbai in early December.

Level 1 :Offences include excessive appealing and showing dissent at an umpire’s decision. Following an official warning, a second Level 1 offence will result in five penalty runs being awarded to the opposing team.
Level 2: Offences (including throwing the ball at a player or making deliberate physical contact with an opponent during play), will result in the immediate awarding of five penalty runs to the opposing team.

Having failed to score 300 in any of their six Test innings in South Africa, Sri Lanka rode Kusal Mendis‘s suave 166 not out to a score of 321 for 4 on the first day in Galle. Along the way, Mendis signed up Asela Gunaratne for a sidekick, forging with him a dominant 196-run fourth-wicket stand, of which Gunaratne’s share was 85.

Should Sri Lanka fear Bangladesh really? On paper the hosts are a far better side. In their top seven, Bangladesh have just two players who average over 40 in Test cricket – Shakib Al Hasan (40) and Mominul Haque (49) and in bowling, they lack the variety or the experience of Sri Lankans. Yet, many fear that this two match series – that gets underway on Tuesday in Galle – as the one where the tourists could turn the tables. There are valid reasons for such concerns.
