My Grandfather’s younger brother – Uncle SP was a gifted cricket writer. Our whole family played Sport to a very high standard. My father was a Combined Services Umpire and a wicket keeper and my uncle Larry Foenander was a Rugby player and Referee. Educated in the best public schools in Ceylon as I knew it. My Uncle Sonny was given the MBE for his dedication to cricket. I met Sir Leonard Hutton when I was 6years old when the England Test Team used to stop in Colombo on the way to Australia. I was priviledged to meet Peter May and all of the 1959 Team. Peter May spent his Honeymoon at my uncle’s house in Ceylon – he married Virginia Gilligan. I had the job of serving the visitors tea and cakes – they were real English Gentleman – not the same as the current players. My uncle sonny gave all his memorabilia to the MCC.
I can tell you a lot of funny stories about the Test Teams who stopped over to play friendlies at the Colombo Oval.
My family living in Australia — Cedric Foenander played cricket in New South Wales. He was a first class batsman. The Foenanders
were amazing Cricketers and Rugby players – Thanks to St Thomas’
College Colombo where they were all educated. My Father was
a Ceylon Army Soldier and cricketer. Tradition has been passed on
to cousins and current generations in England and Australia.

btw S.P. Foenander was educated at Wesley College, Colombo and captained the cricket team for 3 successive years. 1901, 1902 & 1903
