Pissu Percy makes his Peace with Jonty

In the picture is Sri Lanka’s renowned cheerleader Percy Abeysekera (on right) who met South Africa’s Jonty Rhodes at the R. Premadasa Stadium recently when the latter was here for a short coaching stint with the Sri Lanka National team. At this meeting the legendary player, world famous for his fielding abilities, remembered how he once misfielded a ball during an international match before Percy picked it up away from the boundary line in fine style falling over, even with his National flag in one hand. Then Jonty had commented quickly: ‘Percy, you are a better fielder than me’. Continue reading

Former Sri Lanka opening batsman Sunil Wettimuny has known just one fear in a life in which he flew jet airliners for 30 years, experiencing bad storms, mechanical breakdowns and terrorist bomb threats: the fear of having to face Jeff Thomson, arguably the fastest bowler to draw breath. Wettimuny’s tryst with Thommo took place in a World Cup match at The Oval on June 11, 1975.

We, the undersigned, refer to the decision taken by the ICC Board (announced on April 16, 2015) to withhold payments owing by the ICC to Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) and the decision to place the funds in an escrow account, following the appointment by the Government of Sri Lanka (GOSL) of an Interim Committee (IC) to govern SLC.
Through this request, the Sri Lankan Public, seeks the ICC Board’s cooperation in assessing and considering the following facts, which forced the GOSL to act and appoint an IC. The purpose of this letter is to ensure the wellbeing of the sport in our country is preserved. Continue reading
