Sri Lanka Under-19 won the five-mat ch Youth ODI series 3-2 with a 62 runs victory over their Bangladesh counterparts as Gurukula College all-rounder Roshan Anuruddha set the stage for the victory with a half century in the final Youth ODI played at Shere Bangla National Stadium, Mirpur in Bangladesh yesterday. After scoring 185 runs thanks largely to a half century by Anuruddha, bowlers did well to restrict the home team to 123 runs to win the final match and the series. While speedsters rattled the top order, Dharmasoka College spinner Ramesh Mendis cleaned up the tail with a three wicket haul to seal the victory in the 36th over. In their chase, Bangladesh lost their first three wickets for 35 runs with Anuruddha taking the first wicket for ten runs. Except Mehedy Hasan (37 runs) no other batsman could top 20 runs as they lost wickets at regular intervals.

While D.S .Senanayake College speedster Binura Fernando picked up two wickets, Chamika Karunaratne and Anuruddha picked up a wicket apiece in the speed department. Spinner Ramesh Mendis was the pick of the bowlers with three wickets. Richmond College all rounder A.K. Tyron picked up one wicket and was also responsible for at least one run out.

Earlier put to bat, the visitors too struggled for runs after losing three wickets for 23 runs. They were 137 for seven wickets at one stage but the back to the wall knock of Anuruddha made sure that Sri Lanka has enough runs to defend. Anuruddha faced 77 balls for his half century and scored six boundaries in his knock. Top order batsmen Minod Bhanuka and Dinuk Wickramanayake scored valuable 30s.

After trailing 2-1, the tourists did well to win the series as they scored back to back victories in the last two matches. Sri Lanka Under-19 won the rain affected fourth match by six wickets according to D/L/ method. After restricting the home team to 244 for eight wickets (47.4 overs) they chased a revised target of 200 runs (in 22.1 overs) with 41 balls to spare.

The just concluded five match youth ODI series the first oversea tour for the team in preparation for the next year’s Youth World Cup. However, some players who took part in the series are not eligible to play next year.

Unity Tour of Singapore turns out to be a success story

Aided by Emirates Airways and others the Unity Team chosen after the recent U 19 MURALI CUP played several cricket matches in Singapore and participated in several fundraising events for the FOUNDATION OF GOODNESS and its programme of reconcilition via sport. The presence of Kumar Sangakkara and Ravindra Pushpakumara as coaches and Russel Arnold as commentator and raconteur spiced and enhanced the programme. And then, of coure, was Murali the livewire — here there and everywhere. What better ambassadors for Lanka and for the paths of reconciliation: two Tamils, one mixed Sinhala-Tamil (Ravi) and two Sinhalese (Kumar and Kushil).

FOG has committed itself to dividing the proceeds into two halves, with one half being committed to the enrichment of sport in the north and the other in the south.

Mahela on Lanka’s plans for the T20 Championship — in Q and A with Rex Clementine

from the Island, 11 September 2012

With the World T-20 just a week away, Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene gives insight to the national cricket team’s campaign in the 12-nation tournament. A major cricket trophy has eluded the 35-year-old and at the twilight of his career, Jayawardene may not want to leave too many things for the future. During the last five years Sri Lanka has reached finals of three ICC events, but has faulted in the last hurdle and here Jayawardene discusses, although it’s a long shot, how Sri Lanka can avoid a repetition. The Sri Lankan captain also speaks on the possibility of promoting Thisara Perera early in the batting order, what inspired the selection of Akila Dananjaya, his take on West Indies and lots more.

Here are the excerpts.

Question: How has been your preparation ahead of the World T-20?

Mahela: We probably lost about two sessions due to weather. But you can’t control weather. Other than that we have had some indoor sessions. Some of the boys who needed extra bit of sessions had that. Most of the guys were part of the SLPL and as far as match practice is concerned, it’s been very good. Everyone is in good nick and we need to just top up a few things like game plans and stuff like that. We want guys to focus on the game plan. Continue reading

That fantastic last over! That fantastic feeling! Slam, Swat, Swish from Ish Sodhi – Kiwi extraordinary

Geroge Binoy, in ESPNcricinfo, where th e title runs “‘We all dog-piled onto Ish’ – Cam Fletcher” … after a 50th over which went 6-1-1-6-2-4

New Zealand’s No. 8, walked out to bat with his team needing 26 off 15 balls to win the quarter-final against a formidable West Indian pace attack at Endeavour Park. As he went in, Sodhi says his coach Matt Horne gave him a wink; he winked back, and doesn’t really remember too much after that. “Yeah. Especially because we lost Cam Fletcher, who was in,” said Sodhi, when asked if he felt that 18 runs off the last over might be too many to get. “He was on 49 and after that I felt a little bit of pressure, but when it came down to the last over it was do-or-die really. Nothing else really crossed my mind.”

Chasing 238, the equation had come down to New Zealand requiring 22 runs off the last two overs. Ronsford Beaton, one of the best bowlers of the World cup so far, was bowling the 49th. He conceded only four runs off the first five balls, and had the well-set Cam Fletcher caught off the sixth.

Before this match, Sodhi had scored nine runs in two innings in the World Cup. He hit the first ball off the last over, bowled by allrounder Justin Greaves, for four but New Zealand managed only two off the next two balls, leaving them 12 to get off the last three. Continue reading

Another Lankan mystery spinner, Akila Dananjaya Perera … A triple promotion from nets to the big league

Michael Roberts

Pic by Ron Gaunt of Sportzpix

This essay is premature. So, too, is Akila Dananjaya alias Mahamarakkala Kurukulasooriya Patabendige Akila Dananjaya Perera. He is so “unripe” and little known that I could not locate him in http://cricketarchive.com/Archive/Players/SL.htmlwhere one’s recce journey is confused by the presence of umpteen Pereras and one KAK Dananjaya as well as one RKGD Dananjaya or Rankoth Gedara Krishan Dinidu Dananjaya.

The story goes that he cropped up as a net bowler for the Sri Lankan players somewhere [WHERE precisely?]; and that he so impressed Mahela Jayewardene that he asked the selectors to include him in the Squad of 30 listed for the forthcoming T20 tournament.

In brief, here was an 18-year old lad who had not played for a club at any professional level pitchforked upwards into the highest ranks in one hell of a trampoline scoop. It is a tale of rags to riches that outdoes the magical story of one Lasith Malinga, whose performance at the nets in Galle so frightened and impressed Marvan Atapattu and  Mahela that they promoted his rapid rise into the A team and then the First Fifteen touring Australia.

Akila Dananjaya’s sudden emergence in this manner raised hackles in sports writer circles. He is now making these good men eat their doubts. His performance for Wayamba United in the matches thus far have been excellent. T 20 is a lottery and many bowlers who return super-figures on one day are taken to the cleaners the next day. Though Sohail Tanvir has cut a swathe through some sides, he too had one bad day. Not so MKPAD Perera thus far: 0 for 24 vs Uthuru Rudras; 2 for 20 vs Uva; 2 for 16 vs Basnahira Dundee; and 3 for 18 vs Nagenahira.  In the result his overall figures up to this point are 4 matches, 16 overs, 77 runs, 7 wkts at an average of 11.00 and E/R of 4.81 and S/R of 13.7. Sri Lanka, South Africa and Bangladesh in the toughest group*

Picking two qualifiers from Group ‘D’ of the ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup 2012 seems to be an uphill task as Sri Lanka, South Africa and Bangladesh are fully capable and prepared to play in the Super League stage while Namibia can turn out to be the surprise package of the event which will run from 11 to 26 August in Queensland, Australia.

Group ‘D’ matches will be played in Brisbane and on the opening day, Sri Lanka will take on Bangladesh at the Allan Border Field.

Sri Lanka finished fourth in the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup 2010 after losing a close semi-final to eventual winner Australia by two wickets. Sri Lanka then suffered a four-wicket defeat against the West Indies in the third/fourth position play-off. Continue reading
