Debacle for Sri Lankan Cricketers in South Africa

Rex Clementine, in Sunday Island 12 February 2017 where the title is Eight weeks of torture in South Africa”

The eight weeks of torture in South Africa is finally over. If Sri Lanka’s series whitewash over Australia last year gave us any false assurance that all is well with our cricket, we have been just given a rude wake up call. It’s all back to square one. The bilateral series against Bangladesh next month will perhaps open us up to harsher realities. Whitewashed in Tests, whitewashed in ODIs, many Sri Lankans boarded the flight from Johannesburg yesterday with their confidence shattered.

Lanka’s Durban Heroics in 2011

Rex Clementine, in Sunday Island, 18 December 2016, where the title isThe Durban drubbing” … The highlighting emphasis is by The Editor, Cricketique.

With Sri Lanka’s cricketers touring South Africa, supporters reminisce the team’s stunning success in that country five years ago when Tillekeratne Dilshan’s side surprised many by recording their first ever Test win on South Africa soil. South Africa is perhaps the hardest place for Asian teams as conditions heavily favour the host country’s fast bowlers. All three sub-continent teams have poor records in South Africa and Sri Lanka has the worst. Prior to the 2011 series, Sri Lanka had played seven Tests in South Africa and had lost six games, three of them by an innings. Very few gave the tourists a chance. The first Test at Centurion was an absolute nightmare as the hosts completed an innings win inside three days.

The World Cup winning Sri Lankan cricket team has just concluded a trip to Australia to celebrate the 20th anniversary of their triumph on that remarkable night of March 17th 1996 at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. Seeing images of the team touring Australia brought back nostalgic memories as it was the players of this particular team that formed the nucleus of the side that ushered in the golden era of Sri Lankan cricket. The four year period from 1995 to 1998 can easily be considered as the golden era of Sri Lankan cricket for their outstanding achievements and the fear they created in opposition. They were not as dominant as Clive Lloyd’s West Indies of the 1970s, but the exciting brand of cricket they played helped change the way the sport was played.

Enter Captain Herath: A Rare Instance of a Spinning Captain

Rex Clementine, in the Island, 24 October 2016, where the title runs “King Herath leads Sri Lanka”
Left-arm spinner Rangana Herath has been bestowed with the rare honour of leading Sri Lanka in Test cricket after captain Angelo Mathews was ruled out of the tour of Zimbabwe with a calf strain yesterday. Herath, the 38-year-old 73 Test veteran is the most experienced cricketer in international cricket. He is also the only current international cricketer to have made his Test debut in the last millennium. He will become the 14th man to lead Sri Lanka in Test cricket and only the second spinner after D.S. de Silva.

“I am absolutely delighted with this honour,” Herath told The Island. “Chairman of Selectors Sanath Jayasuriya called me up today and informed that Angelo has been ruled out of the series and that I will have to step in as captain,” Herath added. “Having said that, these are difficult circumstances having lost two of our leading players. Both Angelo and Chandi have done remarkably well for us over the years,” Herath further said. Continue reading

Enter Jeffrey Vandersay. In the Footsteps of Warne? Yeah … and Nay., Nay

Rex Clementine,  in The Sunday Island, 23 October 2016, where the title reads ” Fate has forced Vandersay to wait patiently”

With the exit of Shane Warne, for a few years, leg-spin looked a dying art. But Pakistan’s Yasir Shah has kept cricket’s most difficult art alive. Last year, as Pakistan won in Sri Lanka after nine years, the leg-spinner took 24 wickets. He became the quickest Pakistani to take 50 wickets in Tests and became the first leg-spinner since Warne to be ranked as world’s number one bowler. He is following on the footsteps of other remarkable Pakistani leg-spinners such as Abdul Qadir and Mushtaq Ahmed.

vanderasay   Leg-spinner Jeffrey Vandersay was out of cricket for more than six months and on Friday spun Sri Lanka ‘A’ to a series win over West Indies ‘A’ taking six wickets in the second innings at Dambulla.

But Yasir, unlike Warne, heavily depends on his stock delivery. Warne was outstanding because he had excellent control over his variations like the googly (one that turns the opposite way), the top spinner (one that doesn’t turn but dips sharpy and bounces higher), the flipper (one that skids through and keeps low), the slider (the faster one). Sri Lanka could provide the answer for the complete package of Warne as there’s a leg-spinner who is obsessed with Warne. Jeffrey Vandersay is his name. Continue reading

Clementine Reviews the Aussie Series

Rex Clementine, in The Island, 19 August 2016, where the title is Cherishing our finest hour in cricket”

The great game of ours is filled with uncertainties. Steven Smith arrived in Colombo having not lost a Test match in the 11 games he had been in charge as Australian captain. Australia were world’s number one ranked team. Their preparations were meticulous.

By arriving 17 days before the first Test, the tourists wanted to be well prepared for the turning tracks here. They used Sri Lankan experts such as Muttiah Muralitharan and Tilan Samaraweera to stay one step ahead of the opponents.

Sri Lanka meanwhile arrived in the island following their tour of England with their heads down. To sum it up, the England tour was a nightmare. The experts were of the view that it will take a considerable time for Sri Lankans to be competitive in international cricket again. Coach Graham Ford wasn’t sure how he was going to make the turnaround happen. He had toiled tirelessly with little result. But he didn’t lose hope. John Wooden, one of the finest basketball coaches used to say, ‘Don’t complain about not having talented athletes. If you keep working hard, talent will emerge.” Ford seemed to have believed in that mantra for some of the younger players he backed in the series made a huge difference. Continue reading

Mr. Equanimity. Accolades for Kusal Mendis

Rex Clementine, deploying Graham Ford, Island, 30 July 2016

Sri Lanka coach Graham Ford has done some high profile coaching jobs with the South African national team and English counties Surrey and Kent. Speaking after close of play on day four in the first Test against Australia, he said Kusal Mendis’ outstanding 176 was one of the best knocks he had ever seen. “It’s one of the best innings I’ve ever seen. It was an absolutely brilliant knock. He seemed to have a plan against all the bowlers – he had an option for all the bowlers. He showed real composure. The odd one did explode and turn on him but he didn’t bother about the previous delivery. He just focused on the next ball and got on with the job. He is an amazing talent. He works really hard and really loves the game,” Ford said.

Rangana Herath gains his Due at Last

Rex Clementine, courtesy of The Island, 20 May 2016, where the title is Herath – Sri Lankan cricket’s most loyal man”

How many of you knew that Rangana Herath made his Test debut before former great Kumar Sangakkara? Herath debuted aged just 21 when the Steve Waugh’s Australians toured the island in 1999 in Galle. In a rain affected game, the Australians batted just once and Herath picked up four wickets for 97. Despite a promising start, opportunities were few and rare for Herath due to the presence of champion spinner Muttiah Muralitharan. Sri Lanka also had in their line-up all-rounder Sanath Jayasuriya, who bowled left-arm spin as well and an overdose of spin wasn’t required.

Life after Mahela and Sanga: Tough Times Ahead in England for Sri Lankan Squad

Rex Clementine,  in the Sunday Island, 8 May 2016, where the title reads When Sri Lanka had a bone to pick with England”

Sri Lanka’s two-month long tour of United Kingdom gets underway today as the national cricket team will take the 30 minute bus drive from London to North West in Chelmsford where they will play a three day warm-up game against Essex. Following the disappointments of Asia Cup and the World T-20, where the defending champions of both events crashed out early, there have been several initiatives made to put the performance of the national team back on track.

After the disastrous recent campaigns in Bangladesh and India, a high demand has been placed on players’ fitness. Sri Lanka’s cricketers have been made to work so hard that the day before their departure to London, skipper Angelo Mathews and deputy Dinesh Chandimal had to visit the gym for fitness work. Dramatic Moments On and Off Field: The Tour of England 2015

Rex Clementine,  in the Sunday Island, 8 May 2016, where the title reads When Sri Lanka had a bone to pick with England”

On Wednesday as the national cricket team took wings to England for a two month tour, captain Angelo Mathews speaking to journalists remembered with fondness the team’s last tour to England, two years ago. The last day of that tour saw much jubilation as Sri Lanka created history by winning their first Test series in England. Arjuna Ranatunga’s superheroes prior to that had won a one off Test series in 1998.Mathews said that he will remember the series ‘for the rest of his life’. It will be the same for several other players as well. And the fans celebrated that series win as if that were the country’s greatest win in sport. The players and fans had been angered by what had preceded prior to the series. They had a bone to pick with England.

AA-Headingly Win 2015 Sri Lanka complete a dramatic win at Leeds in the penultimate ball of the game to record their first ever Test series win in England in 2014.
