Day Three in Galle: Watling stabilises New Zealand

Danny Byrne  “Watling bats New Zealand into a strong position at the end of another fiercely competitive day”

The new ball was taken immediately play began this morning by Trent Boult from the Fort End. Ajaz had bowled all his 29 overs yesterday from the Fort End and for some reason he decided to have a go from the Pavilion End this morning. Lakmal threw the kitchen sink at a Boult bouncer while closing his eyes and the ball flew over deep fine leg for a six to reduce the New Zealand lead to only 10. Boult’s bouncers were hitting arms and helmets and the medical advisor was on the pitch twice in the first half hour. Two balls after his second visit to check on Lakmal the tall Sri Lankan played on to a wide delivery having scored a valuable 40 from 98 balls ( 242 – 8 ). Dickwella used his feet well to hit Ajaz with the spin over mid-wicket for a boundary before completing his half century from 95 balls which surprisingly for him included only two boundaries.

Day Two in Galle …. Wickets Tumble

Danny Byrene’s Report: “The rain stays away as 12 wickets fall in the day to leave the match nicely balanced”

Most batsmen go through a period in their careers when they can’t score runs as easily as before, though in Steven Smith’s case it required a piece of sandpaper and a nine month ban to produce the equivalent effect. Ross Taylor went through a lean period in 2018 when he only managed 277 runs from 12 innings at 23.08. His current average is 47.31 having stormed back into form with a double century against Bangladesh at the Basin Reserve in March of this year. He has scored Test centuries against all the competing sides excluding Ireland and Afghanistan with the exception of South Africa. This morning he was hoping to add to his tally of 18 centuries resuming his innings on 86 not out. Play began 15 minutes early to make up for the 22 overs lost to the weather the previous day. Taylor was caught behind off the first ball he faced, a warm-up delivery from Lakmal that he tried to cut behind square leg ( 205 – 6 ). Santner was lbw to Lakmal twenty minutes later not offering a shot ( 216 – 7 ) and Southee took this as a cue to try to hit some sixes. He smashed Dananjaya over long-on despite a fielder being stationed there and was then comically run out from first slip three balls later not realizing where the ball had gone ( 222 – 8 ).

Day One in Galle: Taylor stands firm as Dananjaya takes five wickets on the first day

Danny Byrne’s Review

I discovered that the ticket they refused to give me yesterday for “an unavoidable circumstance” was not due to the Galle CC Stand being closed, but rather that the authorities realised they could make more money by selling access to the Galle CC Stand in a more creative manner. As the Galle CC Stand is principally a Member’s Stand it has suddenly become possible to purchase membership for a week for the sum of 7500 Rupees. All I had to do was try to locate the office of the Club Secretary Mr. Pitigala and hand over the money after 8.30 am and I would have access to a Bar, a Restaurant and comfortable seating for five days. It would have been nice to have handed it over in used 20 Rupee notes in a brown paper bag, but I didn’t have time to go to the bank and a stationary shop in advance. On arrival at the ground I was looking for a sign saying “Tourist fleecing – this way,” but the operation was a bit more discreet and I was fortunate to have been tipped off by an existing Life Member. I now have a nice credit card sized bright blue temporary membership card and I was even issued with a receipt for the 7500 Rupees. Naturally there was no explanation as to what passed as “an unavoidable circumstance” or why my initial purchase of a 5 Day pass for 5000 Rupees wasn’t sufficient to gain entry. Once I climbed the stairs and reached the members enclosure I was promptly informed that the Bar would remain closed due to a religious holiday.

Daniel Byrne’s Reflections: Awaiting the Galle Test Encounter

Sri Lanka verses New Zealand – August 2019. A quick look at the two squads.

The Kiwis recently appointed two metre Peter as their Batting Coach while Chris Martin has allegedly been working with three of Sri Lanka’s up and coming stars. Lahiru Kumara has currently scored 44 runs in Test cricket while accumulating 50 wickets. His only scores of 7 and above have involved some slogging at the end of a poor innings from his team. Martin has been trying to show him the virtue of playing and missing as a more elegant method of not scoring runs. When he hit his top score of 10, he was badly let down by another of Martin’s students – Vishwa Fernando. Kumara was sitting nicely on 0 when Shami dropped a caught and bowled chance offered by Fernando at the beginning of the 10th wicket partnership in Pallekele in 2017.

Galle …. Eating Humble Pie

Thoughts from the Inimitable ERROL FERNANDO in Melbourne

Thank you, Michael, for your information about the fantastic Test match played in your beloved home town Galle.I was overjoyed to be wrong  –  very wrong  – to doubt that Sri Lanka would score 268 in the fourth innings and win the match. And I was also guilty of insulting Karunaratne and Thirimanne by being surprised at their awe-inspiring opening partnership of 161 which  set up the victory. It was one of the great achievements in Sri Lankan cricket.

Meandering Thoughts about the Galle Test Match

Michael Roberts

I was able to observe the Test Match between New Zealand and Sri Lanka at Galle during the first two days. This was initially from the first floor precincts of the Galle Cricket Club, where I was delighted to find my old friend Nick White from Australia seated amidst equally diehard cricket ‘tragics’ from abroad: one Kiwi, one Englander and one Irish-Brit in an arena that was sparsely peopled.

A saunter down the ground produced unexpected fortune. Eranga Jayawardena, a talented cameraman for Associated Press, greeted me warmly and immediately arranged for my entry to the Press Box. This spot was ‘heaven’: we were more or less behind the bowler’s arm at the pavilion end and there was tea around the corner if one so desired.

Statistical Oddities and Other Odds and Ends from the Galle Test Match and Beyond

133* – The partnership between Dimuth Karunaratne and Lahiru Thirimanne is Sri Lanka’s highest for the first wicket in the fourth innings of a Test. Karunaratne was involved in the previous highest as well – 124 with Kaushal Silva, against Pakistan in Dubai in 2014. Sri Lanka were chasing a target of 137 then, and won by nine wickets.

Dimuth Karunaratne stands as Calm as Tall

Andrew Fidel Fernando in ESPNcricinfo, 17 August 2019, where the title runs “Karunaratne, a cool captain for Sri Lanka’s high seas”

The selectors are making strange picks, the board is trying to sack another coach, the sports minister is making serious overreaches, the XI changes from series to series, but from amid this chaos, which to many has seemed like the wreckage of a once-was cricketing power, Dimuth Karunaratne has eked out a small but significant patch of stability.

Andrew Fernando evaluates Sri Lanka’s Prospects

Andrew Fidel Fernando, in ESPNcricinfo.com, 13 August 2019, where the title is England whitewash forced us to rethink plans for New Zealand Tests – Dimuth Karunaratne”

Sri Lanka may have whitewashed South Africa in February, but their most recent Test series at home brought a 3-0 defeat at the hands of England. Though the hosts’ spinners were expected to dominate the England batsmen, the opposition top order batted aggressively, and found ways to put up daunting totals.
