Chamari Atapattu scored 113 runs in 66 balls against World top-dog Women’s Cricket team Australia ay Sydney today — albeit in a losing cause because Australia had piled on 217 for 4 wkts in their twenty overs in the First ODI match up during the Sri Lankan Women’s tour. I was fortunate to catch most of her innings because I turned on the TV with the intention of watching Australia play Wales in the World Cup Rugby tournament. I can assure readers that Chamari’s striking was clean and scintillating. Several of her sixers or fours were straight hits.

Chamari looking and sounding like an Aussie!
It was in a losing cause though –because Asutralia had hammered 217 runs for 4 wkts in their twenty overs –with Bethany Mooney scoring 113 in 61 balls. This meant that Mooney and Atapattu figure in a relatively rare event’: when two centuries are scored during one Twenty-Over game.

AN EMAlL NOTE from ERROL FERNANDO in Melbourne, 29 September 2019:
Thank you, Michael, for your description of Chamira Atapattu’s fantastic innings today. I am extremely sorry that I missed it. However, I had the good fortune to see her breathtaking innings of 178 in a one-day international against Australia. That was certainly an innings to behold and gave me as much pleasure as any great one-day innings I have watched in the Men’s game. She is an extraordinary player and I will drop everything and make sure that I watch her next innings!
Thank you for sharing and all the best, Errol
Note that Errol played cricket for Trinity College, Kandy and Peradeniya University …. so it is not a ‘layman’ speaking.

Frederick Kreltszheim An amazing innings. Although small in stature her timing is excellent and the 8 sixes cleared the boundary with ease. Wonderful talent. A pity she does not have much support from others in the team.

Senanie de Silva Thanks for sharing..In our day girls werr only fielders..but my father encouraged me to play with him. Bought me a full cricket set for my 10th B’day..and because the bat was too heavy he bought a smaller one..The set was ultimately “stolen “by some Royalists..my friends brothers friends..who claimed it cant be mine because I didnt have a brother; but a Thomian cousin taught me to spin the ball etc and the boys in the neighbourhood at Sulaiman Terrace allowed me into their game..
So Womens Cricket brings me joy and I revel in our teams achievements …..
