Royal—St. Thomas
This match was played on the 12th and 13th March on the S.S.C. grounds. The usual preparations were made and everything was set for a fine match. Rain which had threatened on the 11th kept off, and the wicket was in ideal condition. The two teams sat for the usual group photograph. At, 11-45 R. Senanayake and F. C. de Saram inspected the wicket and Senanayake tossed. To the great joy of all Royalists de Saram won and decided to bat. This is the fourth year in succession that S.T.C. have lost the toss.
At a few minutes to twelve the two umpires, Messrs. D. L. de Saram and F. C. W. van Geyzel walked out, followed by the Thomian team. Heyn and Mendis opened the Royal innings. Much depended on these two. If they succeeded in breaking the bowling, we were well on the way to a big score. Selvadurai opened for S.T.C. at the Pavilion end. In his second over Mendis was missed behind the stumps. But, later in the over Heyn played out half-heartedly at an out-swinger and was easily held at cover. De Saram then came in. He played out the rest of the over, avoiding Selvadurai’s out-swingers. Mendis did not appear to be at all excited after his escape, and in Gauder’s next over he hit him for a four and a two. In Gauder’s third over, however, he made no attempt, to play a well-pitched up ball and was out l.b.w. He evidently thought the ball was swinging in too much for an l.b.w. We were now in rather an awkward position.
Two of our soundest batsmen were out. Vandort the next man in was a recruit, and under the conditions likely to be rather nervous. The first, ball he faced was a, full toss on the off and he hit it for four. After this he played really good cricket and appeared to be quite at his ease. At 61 Vandort played back to drive a good-length ball, but was beaten by the pace of the wicket and given out, l.b.w. Weinman came in next but playing out to Selvadurai on the flight of the ball he missed it completely and was out l.b.w. 4 for 62 was very bad on such a wicket. The rest of the men were recruits except Gunawardena, a hitter pure and simple and LaBrooy, our fast-bowler.
Porrit was obviously nervous when he came in. He scored a single off the fourth ball he faced and then for nearly half-an-hour, de Saram managed to face all the bowling. He, was well set by this time. When Porrit came in he had scored twenty-five. He scored his next forty while Porrit got a single. When Porrit did get a chance at the bowling he had got quite accustomed to the crowd. He hit a full toss on the leg for four and after this played with great freedom. When de Saram got his century, Porrit had scored forty.
Both now played very free cricket. At 2-30 the second century was signalled. Soon afterwards Porrit in attempting to pull a half-volley, mistimed it and was caught at silly mid-on. He had used this dangerous shot with great success in his innings. He made two or three beautiful late cuts and altogether played a fine innings. There was no semblance of a chance. Porrit is still quite young and for the next two or three years ought to do a lot for the school. A. L. Gunasekera was next man in and kept his end up till the tea-interval. De Saram had now scored 125.
At 3-15 we resumed our innings. Gunasekara was soon out l.b.w. to Gauder. Rock came in to partner de Saram. He seemed quite at home until calling for a foolish run he was run-out. Goonewardena came in next. De Saram was now 140. Eight runs more were required for him to equal the record put up by D. B. Gunasekere last year. But he was not to make these. Running out to hit Gauder, he misjudged the ball and was given out l.b.w. He had very bad luck in not beating the record. He played a fine game. He gave a chance behind the stumps when he was 75, but otherwise played a magnificent innings. He hit fifteen 4’s. He batted for 2¾ hours. LaBrooy then went in. Goonewardene hit two 4’s, but playing back to hook Ponniah he misjudged the pace of the wicket and was out l.b.w. De Kretser the last man in had scored 3 when the innings was declared closed at 3-50. The Royal innings had lasted 3¼ hours.
Practically the whole total was scored by de Saram, Vandort and Porrit, emphasising the fact that we depend very much on a few men. Fortunately, Porrit played the innings of his life and helped de Saram to put up a respectable total. The Thomian bowling was steady at the start, but during the de Saram-Porrit partnership, it seemed to lose much of its sting. The bowlers appeared to allow the batsmen to get on top without fighting back. Their fielding was quite good right through.
Clouds were now beginning to blow over and it was obvious that it would rain about five. At four o’clock the Royalists went out to field. De Saram opened bowling at the Town Hall end. He was swinging away, but not bowling as fast as usual. He also appeared to be troubled by twinges of cramp. Rock bowled at the Pavilion end and with his first ball he got J. R. Senanayake l.b.w.
Ponniah came in next. De Saram seemed to get over his cramp, but he soon put on LaBrooy at his end. After Rock had bowled four overs, Weinman bowled an over at his end to allow LaBrooy to change ends as the wind was now blowing from the Pavilion end. De Kretser bowled from the other end. His first ball had Palipane l.b.w. In his second over Ponniah and R. Senanayake were out l.b.w. to successive balls. De Kretser bowls leg-breaks, but the wicket was so hard that they kept straight through for l.b.w. At this stage heavy rain came down and play was abandoned for the day. We were in a very strong position. The wicket next day was sure to play tricks, at least for the early part of the day.
At 12 on the next day we went out to field again. The wicket was very slow, but not yet really bad. De Saram and LaBrooy opened to see which end was the more suitable. After two overs de Saram gave over to A. L. Gunasekera. Meanwhile LaBrooy bowled half-volleys. These the batsmen played too soon and in this way he got the wickets of Amerasinghe and Selvadurai. Wijesekera who was playing a stubborn innings was soon afterwards brilliantly run out by Porrit. De Saram then brought on Rock and he finished off the Thomian innings by capturing the last two wickets with excellent balls. Our fielding and bowling were very good throughout. Though we had a slow wicket to bowl on we had no one who could really make use of it. Most of our bowlers would have preferred a fast wicket. Anyway we were in a very strong position and generally considered to be the winning side. Most people thought that the Thomians would collapse in the second innings.
The Thomian start gave one the idea that the match would be over before tea. De Saram had Palipana caught at forward shortleg in his first over. In his second he clean bowled J. R. Senanayake. When six runs had been scored Gunawardena brilliantly ran out V. S. de Silva. Running across from long-on to long-off he threw down the wicket at the bowler’s end running him out by yards. 3 for 6 suggested a complete collapse. Wijesekera aud R. Senanayake were now together. Both played careful cricket until Senanayake was caught at short-leg off Rock. This was distinctly unfortunate for S.T.C. Selvadurai, the next man in, kept his end up with stubborn determination. The wicket was playing dead easy and our bowlers could not make any pace off it.
Porrit who was rumoured to be a good bowler on turf was at last put on. The change had a good effect as he had Selvadurai l.b.w. in his third over. Amerasinghe now came in. This pair were to prove a block on which our bowlers nearly broke themselves. Amerasinghe played his natural free game and it nearly proved to be our undoing. Wijesekera went along quietly. Never flustered, he scored faster than he appeared to do. These two played quite different games. Wijesekera, the sounder of the two, used the leg-glance and late-cut to get most of his runs, while Amerasinghe stepped out and drove heartily. Perhaps it was the contrast in the styles of these two players that helped them to so get on top of the bowling.
At tea the score was 135 for 5. The rain of which we were chiefly afraid, looked quite close. After tea the Thomian pair continued in the same style as before. Every possible bowling combination was used. The fielding never slackened. At last de Saram brought himself on at the Pavilion end. Amerasinghe attempted to hook a short-pitched ball which was faster than usual and mistimed it. Rock moved in from mid-on and took an easy catch. This was at 4-15. Cooke came in and played the bowling almost without lifting his bat. The field tried everything to break up this pair. At times even two runs were given away where there was really only one to be scored to get Wijesekera away from the bowling.
At 214 de Saram made a ball kick and Cooke touching it was brilliantly held by Porrit at third slip. The bowling now seemed to possess new life. During the Wijesekera-Cooke partnership, the new ball was obtained. It is interesting to note that de Saram bowled a wide for four byes to get this. This undoubtedly helped very much in getting the last few wickets. Ponniah touched a short-pitched ball which kicked up to his head, and Porrit took another good catch in the slips. Rock was then brought on and had Wijesekera l.b.w. The last man was bowled by de Saram at 5-30. Twenty-one runs were now needed for victory. We had thirty-five minutes’ play according to the times fixed before the match, but rain was threatening to fall every minute. Heyn and Vandort opened the innings. The thomians had nearly all their fielders on the off and bowled well on the off. At 9 Heyn was out. De Saram went in but was immediately attacked by cramp. He got over it but was troubled by slight twinges every now and again. At 16 he was caught out. H. S. R. Goonewardena went in and with Vandort hit off the required runs 5 minutes before time.
The match was one of the most exciting ever played. At one time Royal appeared to have everything their own way. Then Amerasinghe and Wijesekera stayed the rot and staged a magnificent recovery. Amerasinghe’s innings was a glorious adventure. It turned out to be a successful one, but it just failed to help the Thomians make a draw of the match. Wijesekera played with a determination worthy of the occasion. For over 4 hours he tried to save the game for S. T. C. ; and while we are very glad that he failed to do so, we congratulate him heartily on a mostmagnificent innings.
Now for a word about our team. It was a great feat to have won the match. They fielded the whole of the second day and right through that time bowled and fielded with marvellous grit. To have got the Thomians out in the 2nd innings on that dead wicket was a wonderful effort. De Saram bowled almost savagely towards the end. Two of his wickets were off balls that kicked head high.
The match is supposed to have set up a world’s record in I.b.w.’s The explanation is a perfectly easy one. Our team had had very little turf practice before the match. What little they had had was on rather a slow wicket. As a natural consequence the pace of the fast S. S. C. wicket beat them time and again. The only bad case was Mendis’. He deliberately put his pad to a ball which he thought was swinging to the leg. Everyone of the others played the ball with his bat, but being beaten by the pace of the wicket was out. In any case they would have been bowled if their pads were not in the way. But the difference is that they were invariably in the correct position to make a scoring shot. It was just inexperience of turf wickets that brought about this result. The idea that we have entirely given up off-side play is entirely mistaken as we could see from the off-side play of de Saram, Vandort, and Porrit two of whom however were out l.b.w. None of the others got going to prove that they could also drive and cut on the off.

The Calendar
The calendar has become conspicuous this year by its very absence, as many of the Fort and Pettah shops have not given calendars to their customers this year as freely as in other years. In fact many shops have not given calendars, and other gifts, at all, as they are retrenching on account of the present “depression.”
A few facts about the calendar may not, therefore, be out of place.
The first calendar we know of is that of the ancient Roman year of Romulus, the founder and first king of Rome. It consisted of ten months only, viz :—
Martius, containing 31 days
Aprilis ,, 30 days
Maius ,, 31 days
Junius ,, 30 days
Quintilis ,, 31 days
Sextilis ,, 30 days
September ,, 30 days
October ,, 31 days
November ,, 30 days
December ,, 30 days
Making in all a year of 304 days.
On using this calendar it was noticed that the seasons were always varying, and that each month came at a different season every year. The Roman emperor Numa discovered this error, and undertook to remedy this evil by adding two months more, Januarius and Februarius, making the year consist of twelve months, as follows:-
Januarius, containing 29 days.
Februarius ,, 28 ,,
Martius ,, 31 ,,
Aprilis ,, 29 ,,
Maius ,, 31 ,,
Junius ,, 29 ,,
Quintilis ,, 31 ,,
Sextilis ,, 29 ,,
September ,, 31 ,,
October ,, 29 ,,
November ,, 29 ,,
December ,, 29 ,,
Making in all 355 days.
Royal College Historical Association NOVEMBER 1930—MARCH 1931.
Towards the end of last term Mr. J. Dalby, Principal of Wesley College, Colombo, delivered a lecture on “School and University Life Six Hundred Years Ago.” It was very interesting and highly appreciated by the large audience. The lecture acted as a fresh stimulus to the progress of this infant Association, and for this we owe the above-named gentleman a deep debt of gratitude.
This term, in spite of the distracting influence created by the cricket season, we have progressed very favourably. The enthusiasm which prevailed at the inaugural meeting last term has not died out, and it is pleasing to note the interest, taken by the younger members of the association.
Out of a possible six meetings we have already held four. The two remaining meetings both of which are lectures, will be held before the term is out. The average attendance stands at 36.
My thanks go to all who readily responded to the call for reading papers and especially to Mr. H. L. Reed and the three Vice Presidents of the Association, whose willing co-operation has considerably lightened my responsibilities.
The following is a synopsis of the work done:-

The Vizianagram Tour
A team of Indian cricketers under the captaincy of the Maharaj Kumar of Vizianagram toured the island last December. It is interesting to note the deeds of Royalists in those matches.
In the match against a team of schoolboys, Royal had three representatives in the team. The Indian team, which included Sutcliffe, found the bowling of D. B. Gunasekera, Jnr., most puzzling. He bowled magnificently and took 7 for 83. He took the wickets of C. K. Naidu and Deodhar, two of India’s finest batsmen. In the School’s innings S. S. Jayewickrema top-scored with 48. He played a fine innings against really good bowling. In the 2nd innings F. C. de Saram top-scored with 31 not out. At one stage 7 wickets were down for 14 runs. Then de Saram and Wijesekera, one from Royal the other from S. T. C., almost played out time and ultimately the game was saved.
There were six Royalists in the Ceylonese side against the Indians. They were the Captain Dr. C. H. Gunasekera, L. D. S. Gunasekera, E. Kelaart, F. C. de Saram, H. Wille and D. B. Gunasekera, Jnr. In this match, too, Royalists did extremely well. E. Kelaart scored 54 and 43, F. C. de Saram 31 and 77 not out and L.D. S. Gunasekera 27 in the 2nd innings.
In the All-Ceylon side too there were also six Royalists. They were the Captain Dr. C. H. Gunasekera, L. D. S. Gunasekera, E. Kelaart, H. C. Poulier, F. C. de Saram and D. B. Gunasekera, Jnr. Once again they did brilliantly. L. D. S. Gunasekera played superb innings of 67, and later, when we were in rather a bad way Dr. C. H. Gunasekera and D. B. Gunasekera, Jnr. put up over a century between them. The Doctor got 50 and D. B. 79, E. Kelaart’s fielding was a feature of the match.
Reviews
We publish the following review from the Ceylon Daily News of Mr. H. J. Wijesinghe’s book ‘ ‘Practical Chemistry”.
This little book, which is the result of years of experience in teaching Chemistry, gives in outline a course of laboratory work which is essentially practical in its nature and so designed as to aid the student in acquiring a good grasp of the fundamental principles of Chemistry. In doing practical work students have as a rule, only a limited time at their disposal and are apt to rush through their work mechanically without co-ordinating the theory they have learnt with their practical work. Mr. Wijesinghe has therefore introduced the minimum of theory required for the understanding of the different sections of this book. In doing this, he has followed a system which he has adopted with great success both at the Royal College and St. Thomas’ College.
As Mr. H. L. Reed, the Principal of the Royal College, says in his introductory remarks to this book “Mr. Wijesinghe may be congratulated upon achieving great lucidity of presentation. Difficulties are anticipated, without any danger of letting the pupil do his work in an automatic way. It appears to me that there is sufficient encouragement to the pupil to consult theoretical books for points or theory, and at the same time there is no need for him to do so at every turn. The difficulty of striking the right mean in this very delicate matter seems to have been largely overcome by Mr. Wijesinghe.
