Dimuth Karunaratne being awarded the Man of the Match and Man of the Series in the recently concluded Test series against Pakistan (in Abu Dhabi and Dubai) has not surprised his mentor, Harsha De Silva. Incidentally, the Australia-based Harsha De Silva did give some useful tips to the Sri Lankan opener Dimuth before the commencement of the series.
Speaking exclusively over telephone from Australia minutes after the win, Harsha De Silva said, “it is pleasing to see Dimuth scoring runs in the first innings ‘also’. I was in Sri Lanka recently. (I) had the pleasure of catching up with him and going in the nets for a hit at his request. We discussed and worked on a few things. He was having trouble early in the inning. I gave him a few tips and drills which I thought would assist him. I am happy to note it’s helping him. Lot of experts have commented that his balance in the crease and head position at contact has improved since then”.
Dimuth missed the double century by four runs. “It was a top notch Test match knock. I don’t think he should be too disappointed. If he continues to bat this well, it won’t be too long where he scores a few of them (double centuries) as an opener. He has the temperament to do so”.
“I reckon he would be more disappointed missing out on scoring a century in the first Test match in Abu Dhabi where he got run out on 93″, he added.”It was a fantastic effort by the team to put up a big score up in their first pink ball, day/night experience. I am sure the team would have done a few training sessions at home and on tour preparing themselves for the challenge. Most of them having played under lights would have helped to adapt to the conditions too”, he signed off.
