On Wednesday, Sri Lanka announced their 3-match Test series squad for the England tour which will be played in May. Sri Lanka announced a 17-member Test squad comprising 8 batsmen, 2 wicketkeeper batsmen, 5 pacers and 2 spinners. Sri Lanka named two new all-rounders in the Test squad as Dasun Shanaka and Dhananjaya Silva, who are yet to make a debut in the Test cricket. On the other hand, a fast bowler, Dhammika Prasad, who was ruled out from the last Test series in the New Zealand tour in December 2015 due to injury, is added to the squad.
Also, Sri Lanka added left-handed batsman Lahiru Thirimanne, wicket-keeper batsman Niroshan Dickwella and pacer Shaminda Eranga in the 17-member squad who were left out in the last Test series. Angelo Mathews is retained as captain of the team while Dinesh Chandimal is selected as vice-captain for the upcoming Test series against England.
From the 15-man Test squad in the last Test series against New Zealand in New Zealand, Sri Lankan selectors have dropped Vishwa Fernando, Udara Jayasundera, Jeffrey Vandersay and Kithuruwan Vithanage for the upcoming England tour.
Sri Lanka’s latest Test form is not good as they lost both the Test against New Zealand in the last Test series while they had only won 4 Tests out of 11 Tests (lost 7 Tests) in 2015. However, the last time Test series against England in the England tour was historic as Sri Lanka won the Test series by 0-1 (it was a two-match Test series). Sri Lanka will play 3-match Test series against England which will begin on 19th May. Before the beginning of the Test series, Sri Lanka will play two 3-day practice matches against the county teams. Apart from the Test series, Sri Lanka will also play 5-match ODI series and only T20I against England. In between a 2-match ODI series against Ireland in Ireland is also scheduled.
