No Fire in Babylon. Sobers in Tears as the Fire Fizzles Out of Windies Cricket

gideon_haighGideon Haigh in the Weekend Australian, 12 December 2015,  where the title reads “Fire in Babylon fades as West Indies face a new reality”

fireThey all play basketball now. Or football. Or T20. Sad isn’t it? They should set up some academies. They should pick some kids and get Viv in to talk to them. Yeah, wasn’t he great? Did you see that film? Cool huh? For a long time, it seems, people have been having the same sort of conversations about cricket in the West Indies, ending for the last five years with a reference to Stevan Riley’s colourful 2010 documentary Fire in Babylon about the team in their 1980s pomp. The film has served as an entertaining distraction from a direction of cricket in the Caribbean that can now be obscure to nobody — certainly not those who’ve watched proceedings at Bellerive Oval these past two days.

A meeting of the West Indies Cricket Board tonight will address a recommendation by Caricom (the Caribbean Community and Common Market) for its immediate dissolution. How long before the same measure is advocated for the team? Continue reading

The Decline of West Indian Cricket … an essay early 2015

Tristan Lavalette, 23 February 2015  courtesy of http://www.firstpost.com/sports/how-west-indies-went-from-ruthless-dominance-to-hopeless-oblivion-2114857.html

The Caribbean conjures romanticised connotations. This is easily gleamed from its archetypal idyllic postcard snapshot of palm trees and white sandy beaches creating an imagery of paradise. Reggae and rum enhance its intoxicating allure. The locale has long been a magnet for mavericks. Literary icons Ernest Hemingway, Hunter S Thompson and Ian Fleming were lured to one of the Caribbean’s pristine islands at certain points during their legendary careers. The Caribbean is a special place, so unsurprisingly the region’s most cherished sports team is innately magnetic. The West Indies play cricket to the tune of their own inimitable rhythm. For decades, the West Indies produced a rotating line of swashbuckling batsmen and a crop of intimidating pacemen. They boasted arguably cricket’s most memorable team, with the 1980s West Indian side spearheaded by Clive Lloyd and then Viv Richards treated more like a rock-star group than a mere cricket team. Mahela and Adil to play for Strikers in Big Bash League

AD STRIKERS 1 SACA and the ADELAIDE STRIKERS coined these capsule sketches for the two imports

AD STRIKERS MAHELAReplacing a player of the calibre of Kieron Pollard is a difficult task, but that’s exactly what the Strikers have done in signing of Sri Lankan legend Mahela Jayawardena. The former national captain has played over 600 international matches, and is widely regarded as one of modern cricket’s greatest-ever players. Averaging an incredible 62.25 for the Central Stags in New Zealand’s domestic T20 competition, Strikers fans need not be concerned about there being any rust during Jayawardena’s first couple of matches. His leadership will also be a significant boost for some of the Strikers’ younger playersContinue reading

Cricket Web’s Ganesh Venkat caught up with Fazeer Mohammed during the recently concluded Third Test between West Indies and South Africa at Bridgetown, Barbados. Fazeer is a well known Commentator and Broadcaster from Port-Of-Spain Trinidad and one of the few commentators who has not played the game at the highest level. In short you can call him the “Harsha Bhogle” of West Indies Cricket. Faz is taking over from Tony Cozier as the face of West Indies cricket behind the microphone. In the first part of the interview Faz talks about how he ended up commenting on cricket, problems facing West Indies Cricket, past players, current players and captaincy issues.

Sri Lanka’s Practice Match buried deep

Courtesy of ESPNcricinfo  ……..http://www.espncricinfo.com/new-zealand-v-sri-lanka-2015-16/content/story/948869.html……. in one of the few accounts available over the past few days … without any scorecard being made available anywhere at any point of time …. a tale of second class treatment for a compatriot ex-colonial country

The Sri Lankans’ bowlers let the NZC President’s XI’s eighth-wicket partnership plunder 124 runs, but batted marginally better than in the first innings to secure a draw in the three-day warm up game in Queenstown. The hosts took a 206-run lead before declaring and the Sri Lankans then moved to 226 for 6 by stumps. A 153-ball 63 from opener Udara Jayasundera led the Sri Lankans’ innings, and heightened his chances of a debut in the first Test against New Zealand next Thursday. He struck up a 108-run partnership with Kithuruwan Vithanage, who hit 61 off 109 himself. Angelo Mathews made an unbeaten 54, while Dinesh Chandimal collected 29. Kusal Perera and Kusal Mendis were dismissed for low scores for the second time in the match.

Dropping catches at slip:  The bucket hands of Graeme Smith and Jacques Kallis left more than a year ago, but Dean Elgar, AB de Villiers and Faf du Plessis have been adequate replacements. Hashim Amla, though, who may see it as his duty as captain to station himself at slips, has not. Amla put down three catches in the India innings and South Africa were made to pay for two of them. When Kyle Abbott induced a thick edge off Rohit Sharma with a reverse-swinging ball, Amla should have taken it with both hands, but he spilled it. Dane Piedt later drew the edge from Ajinkya Rahane with a slider when was on 78, and Amla had to get low down to his left but again, with both hands to grasp the ball, he let it go. Rahane added 49 more runs to his score. Then, Abbott was left down again when Ashwin hung his bat outside offstump and the edged ball died on Amla. Ashwin was on 14 at the time, and went on to make 56. Continue reading

John Bull dissects Cricket for Yankee Doodle Dandie

S. N. Arseculeratne

I read somewhere that a game of cricket was played in New York. But no news after that. The reason may lie in the following story. An American asked an Englishman, (they who invented the game) to explain to him what this game is all about. The Englishman took another gulp of his beer and proceeded.

You have two sides, one out in the field

            And one in.

Each man that’s in the side that’s in, goes out

and when he’s out he comes in

and the next man goes in till he’s out.

When they are all out, the side that’s out comes in

and the side that has been in, goes out

and tries to get those coming in, out.

Sometimes you get men still in and not out.

When both sides have been in and out including the not outs, that’s the end of the game

The American grabbed the Englishman’s beer mug and finished it
