Murali Cup 2013 Tournament Summary= A community focused charity fund-raising cricket initiative
INTRODUCTION: The Murali Cup is an initiative of the Foundation of Goodness (FOG), a grassroots charity championed by the great Muttiah Muralitharan, Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardena. The simple idea is to bring together young cricketers from different backgrounds to foster cross-cultural friendships and harmony as well as develop cricket skills. The tournament was started in 2011 with an eight-team schools tournament in Seenigama on Sri Lanka’s beautiful south-west coast. Then in 2012 we staged a special reconciliation tournament with the assistance of the International Cricket Council in the previously war-torn northern province with a total of 20 local teams. In 2013 we will be returning to Seenigama for another 8-team tournament with the proposed participation of five overseas schools and three invited local teams. The tournament is to be staged between 10-19 July.
As well as this tournament providing a unique experience for the children who participate, it is also designed as a fundraising tool to help with the FOG’s ambitious sports development work in the North and East of Sri Lanka. In this regard it is hoped that participating teams will help raise funds through fundraising before the tournament in their home communities.
TOURNAMENT PACKAGE: This tour package assumes a touring group of 15-man playing squad (in 5 triple rooms) and 2 support staff (in 1 twin room) for a 9 night tour. Please note the package includes three-star accommodation, transport in an airconditioned coach, a full-time liaison officer, all the cricket and tournament logistical costs including venue hire, umpires, scorers, match day lunches and water, as well as a contribution towards local team costs which we have to support.
The tournament cost does not include flights but assistance can be provided if required.
A 20% tour deposit is required upon confirmation with the final balance payable six weeks prior to the tournament’s commencement.
TOURNAMENT FORMAT: Matches are 40 overs per side, played with a white ball and official tournament coloured playing kit (provided). The tournament includes three local teams who are sponsored: a Seenigama Foundation of Goodness Academy side, a combined team from the north and a third school invited by the Mahela Jayawardene Foundation.
The eight teams are split into two pools of four teams playing matches in four different venues. Each team players three group matches with the top two teams qualifying for the semi-finals and the two bottom-placed teams entering a plate competition. Each team will therefore play five matches. For more information on the tournament including photographs and video footage of the inaugural 2011 edition, please visit our tournament website – www.themuralicup.com
