Sri Lanka and England finish ODI series level 2-2 Saturday, 14 August 2010 07:45England Under-19s earned a share of the one-day series with their Sri Lanka counterparts, courtesy of a creditable 51-run Duckworth-Lewis victory at Canterbury in the fifth and final match.
A mixed batting effort meant England were required to defend 184, and new-ball bowlers Matt Dunn and David Payne produced an exemplary response to reduce the tourists to 43 for five. Rain intervened at that point and, after a 90-minute delay, Sri Lanka were set a target of 177 in 41 overs. That proved well out of reach as they were dismissed in 34 overs, Payne finishing with 4-40 from eight and Dunn 3-15 from 6.1. England opener Jack Manuel was named man of the match for his fluent 63 that underpinned the hosts’ 184 all out in 48.2 overs on a slow, turning wicket. After Sri Lanka’s 11-run win yesterday at the same venue, which put them 2-1 up in the series, home skipper Paul Best chose to bat first on a pitch seemingly destined to deteriorate. Only Manuel, the Worcestershire left-hander, showed the necessary concentration to build an innings, as England progressed to a promising position at 117 for four. Manuel was unafraid to dance down the track or sweep the bowlers, though he eventually succumbed to a slog-sweep that ushered in mid-innings uncertainty for his colleagues, on a tough pitch to accumulate. Number eight Best was left to shepherd the tail, which he did to some effect with a patient 28 not out from 47 balls. Lahiru Jayarathne’s seamers caused most disruption to England, ridding them of in-form top-order batsmen Lewis Gregory and Luke Wells, and returning to claim last man Dunn. Dunn and Payne soon turned the tables. With hardly any runs on offer, Rumesh Buddika was defeated by Payne’s sumptuous slower-ball yorker. Opener Jack Manuel was named man of the match for his 63 that allowed England to post 184 on a slow pitch at Canterbury. Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Kithuruwan Vithanage and Ramith Rambukewlla all followed to uncertain shots off the fast bowlers, to have Sri Lanka in disarray. The shutters stayed down as Best raced through his overs and, when after 20.2 overs rain swept across the ground, the tourists were more than 60 runs behind England under D-L calculations. Best also demonstrated sharp thinking, or an act contrary to the ‘Spirit of Cricket’, whichever your view, in the crucial 20th over. With the groundstaff poised to bring the covers on, England needed to complete the over in order to guarantee a match under the D-L method. The England captain, fielding at mid-off, appeared to deliberately put down Denuwan Rajakaruna, presumably in order for Wells to get through his six balls quicker. A nonplussed Rajakaruna survived unbeaten on nine and on the resumption bought into question Best’s tactic as he advanced his score. Although he was run out for 28, Akshu Fernando and captain Chathura Peiris kept Sri Lanka’s hopes alive. Fernando fell victim of brilliant England team-work on the long-off boundary, departing for 23 to Best’s catch. The tourists’ tail could not support their skipper and he was last out, bowled by a jubilant Dunn for 26, as England created perfect symmetry in their summer; the Test and Twenty20 international series against Sri Lanka were also drawn. Best said: “It was great to win the final match and level the one-day series. The result was a fair reflection of the strength of the two teams and it was fantastic for England players ending their U19s career to finish on a high.” |

Sri Lanka 221 (Rambukwella 68, Vithanage 45, Payne 3-46) beat England 210 (Wells 47, Jayarathne 3-43) by 11 runs
Scorecard
Sri Lanka Under-19 took a 2-1 lead in their five-match one-day series against England Under-19 as opener Ramith Rambukwella’s industrious half-century set up an 11-run win in the fourth match at Canterbury. Set 222 to win, all but one of England’s top-order batsman got off to starts but none could push on, and the hosts were eventually bowled out for 210 after 49 overs.
Sri Lankan captain Chathura Peiris opted to bat first at the St. Lawrence Ground but his side were soon in trouble, losing Rumesh Buddika and Bhanuka Rajapaksa inside the first seven overs to slip to 28 for 2. The visitors fought back through a 94-run partnership for the third wicket between Rambukwella (68) and Kithuruwan Vithanage (45) to reach 122 in the 29th over before Rambukwella was dismissed by England captain Paul Best.
Although none of the lower order were able to make a significant contribution Sri Lanka managed to post 221 before being bowled out with five balls remaining. Left-arm seamer David Payne led the way for England with 3 for 46, and Best put in yet another good performance to pick up an economical 2 for 35 and take his series wicket tally to six.
Openers Joe Root and Jack Manuel got England off to a decent start with a partnership of 36 but wickets then fell at regular intervals and the hosts soon got behind the required run rate. Luke Wells top scored with 47 but when he was caught behind off Lahiru Jayarathne England still needed 40 to win from 30 balls with three wickets in hand. The target proved too much for the lower order batsmen and England were bowled out for 210.

Sri Lanka 176 for 5 (Vithanage 51*, Rajapaksa 46, Best 2-38) beat England 175 (Gregory 87, de Mel 3-23, Rajaguru 3-33) by five wickets
Scorecard
Sri Lanka Under-19 drew level in their limited-overs series against England Under-19, Kithuruwan Vithanage’s unbeaten fifty setting up a five-wicket win in the second match at Arundel. Paul Best won the toss yet again and decided to bat first, but his side were soon in trouble and England were bowled out for just 175 in the final over of their innings, Lewis Gregory’s 87 the only score of note. The Sri Lankans pegged England back as several players contributed in the field, and it was a similar story when they batted with runs spread through the middle order.
It had looked as though this would be another close-fought affair between these two sides when Yasoda Lanka was run out by Adam Ball for just 7 in the sixth over and Rumesh Buddika’s aggressive innings was cut short soon afterwards as Sri Lanka slipped to 32 for 2. But Bhanuka Rajapaksa and Vithanage’s 72-run stand for the third wicket put their side firmly on top.
Rajapaksa cracked eight fours as he and Vithanage rattled along at well over a-run-a-ball, but his dismissal for 46 by Best shortly after Sri Lanka’s score had gone past 100 sparked a nervous passage of play. Wicketkeeper Denuwan Rajakaruna was trapped in front of his stumps by Joe Root fifth ball and Best had his second wicket three overs later when he bowled Dhanushka Gunathilleke for 14 as Sri Lanka slipped to 125 for 5.
But Vithanage kept calm, finding an able partner in Akshu Fernando, who struck two fours and two sixes in an otherwise circumspect unbeaten 29. Together they carried Sri Lanka over the line with more than 15 overs to spare, putting on 51 for the sixth wicket. Vithanage capped his day by cracking James Thorpe for four to go past fifty and seal the win in one stroke. This is just the sort of nerveless innings he is already becoming known for after steering Sri Lanka to a tense one-wicket win over Pakistan in the Tri-Nation Under-19 tournament in Sri Lanka last year
As they have done several times already in helpful conditions on this tour, Sri Lanka’s left/right new-ball pair of Chathura Peiris and Sanitha de Mel made early inroads into England’s line-up. On this occasion de Mel proved particularly destructive, removing Joe Root, Jack Manuel and Alex Barrow in quick succession in his opening spell before Rajapaksa had Zafar Ansari, on his England Under-19 debut, caught behind to leave the home side tottering at 41 for 4.
Gregory and Luke Wells clawed things back for England with a half-century stand for the fifth wicket – the highest partnership of the innings – before Wells gave Nadeera Rajaguru the first of his three wickets. Gregory went to his own fifty from 105 balls, and picked up his scoring rate thereafter, but wickets continued to fall around him and he was the last man out as England’s 10th wicket fell with two balls remaining in their innings.
