Rangana Herath: Affable and Lethal

Champika Fernando, in Daily Mirror, 26 August 2018, with title as Retired or not; lethal but affable Herath is a living legend”

The timing and manner of a cricketer’s retirement can often tell you much about the player’s career. In Rangana Herath’s case, both seem, if not perfect, nearly so.

Herath is still at the top of his game, arguably the world’s number one spinner at present. It may justifiably be asked why he chose to retire. His aging legs, however, seem to offer him a message that they cannot take the physical strain any longer. His knees were operated on and he often takes injections for relief from constant pain.

Lankan Squad for the West Indies: Viewpoints

ONE: “Will Sri Lanka cold-shoulder Vandersay again?”  by Sportswriter, Sunday Observer, 13 May 2018

Uncapped leg spin bowler Jeffrey Vandersay has been recalled into the Sri Lanka squad for the upcoming three-Test tour of the West Indies, but experts fear that he will most likely sit out the matches as has been the case before. Vandersay shot to the limelight by taking seven wickets in a three-day match against Pakistan three years ago but was not selected for the ensuing Test series against the same opposition.

Another Milestone for Herath

Rangana Herath went past Wasim Akram to become the most prolific left-arm bowler in Test history when he dismissed Bangladesh’s last wicket. Akram took 414 wickets at an average of 23.62 in 104 matches. Herath, on the other hand, was playing only the 89th Test of his career. New Zealand’s Daniel Vettori is third on this list with 362 wicket from 113 matches. Chaminda Vaas, Mitchell Johnson and Zaheer Khan are the only other left-armers to take at least 300 Tests wickets.

The Epitome of Grit: Herath top scores in Sri Lanka’s First Innings

Building on Lakmal’s bowling work, Rangana Herath saved sri Lanka’s batting blushes in the first innings and ensured that his side secured a reasonable lead by carving out a pugnacious 67 runs. tTjis effort is suitably recognised by Krishnaswamy and ESPNcricinfo.

Bowlers who bat a bit (as opposed to bowling allrounders like Mitchell Starc or Vernon Philander) can be broadly divided into two camps: blockers, such as Ishant Sharma or Devendra Bishoo, and bashers, of whom Tim Southee – who has clattered 61 sixes in 57 Tests – would be an extreme example. Rangana Herath doesn’t really fall in either camp. He isn’t built like most bowlers, of spin or seam, and like other short, squat batsmen he’s happiest playing square of the wicket. Early in his innings on Sunday, Bhuvneshwar Kumar swung one into his stumps, late, and was on the verge of appealing for lbw when Herath braced his front leg to make last-minute room for his bat to flick the ball to the midwicket boundary.

Sa’adi on History-Making Sri Lankan Series Win

Sa’adi Thawfeeq, in Daily News, 11 October 2017, with the title reading “Lankan cricketers create history in UAE”

DUBAI, Tuesday – Sri Lanka inflicted on Pakistan their first Test series defeat since they made the UAE their home venue in 2010 when they beat them by 68 runs with more than two sessions to spare on the fifth and final day to win the second Test played at the Dubai International Stadium and thereby clinch the two-match series 2-0.

Several Hands fashion Sri Lanka’s Defeat of Pakistan in 2nd Test

Andrew Fidel Fernando, courtesy of ESPNcricinfo, 3 October 2017, where the title runs “Dilruwan’s five-for seals memorable series sweep

Dilruwan celebrates a wicket

Sri Lanka 482 (Karunaratne 196, Yasir 6-184) and 96 (Wahab 4-41, Haris 3-1) beat Pakistan 262 (Azhar 59, Haris 56, Dilruwan 3-72, Herath 3-84) and 248 (Shafiq 112, Dilruwan 5-98) by 68 runs
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details

Like waves breaking upon a cliff, Sri Lanka’s bowlers kept coming at Pakistan, until eventually, the hosts fractured and tumbled into the sea. So tantalisingly had the match been poised overnight, perhaps the ending was even a little anticlimactic. Sri Lanka’s margin of victory was 68 runs – a comfortable win by most standards. Though Sarfraz Ahmed and Asad Shafiq had begun confidently, the visitors needed only 5.5 overs to break that partnership, and about 90 minutes in all to wipe out the lower half of the Pakistan innings. The series had been swept, completely unexpectedly, 2-0. Continue reading
