MUMBAI: The toss will remain the fundamental starting point of a Test match. The Anil Kumble-led Cricket Committee of the ICC on Tuesday decided against abolishing the spin of coin in the game’s traditional format, calling it an “integral part of the narrative”. The International Cricket Council (ICC) was mulling doing away with the flip of the coin during the World Test Championship scheduled to start from July 2019 as part of measures to boost the flagging fortunes of the long format.

Taking Al-Jazeera for A Ride? Morris, Indika and Mendis

A THOUGHT from The Editor Cricketique … informed by some details for Morris and Mendis in ESPNcricinfo … which details Al-Jazeera does not seem to have checked because they say that Mendis is from Galle …. We now need a snap of the other alleged plotter Tharanga Indika [whom I believe is an old Aloysian who does have close links with Jayananda Warnaweera … BUT was not a curator if if the BCCSL info in ESPNcricinfo is correct]

Tharindu Mendis   Robin Morris

Their First Test Encounter: When Irish Eyes are Gleaming

Jarrod Kimber, courtesy of ESPNcricinfo, 11 May 2018, where the title is

Michael Halliday, the former Ireland captain, has a broken pub roof tile on his mantelpiece. It is signed by Imran Khan. Because it was Imran who hit him out of Pagham Cricket ground when playing for Sussex against Ireland in 1977. Imran Khan made a hundred that day.

When Afghanistan and Ireland gained Test Status in Cricket in Mid-2017. Hurrah!

BBC, June 2017 where the title reads “Ireland & Afghanistan awarded Test status by International Cricket Council”

Ireland and Afghanistan have been granted Test status by the International Cricket Council. It increases the number of countries competing at the top level of international cricket to 12. They are the first admissions since Bangladesh gained Test status in 2000.

The two countries, who already have one-day and Twenty20 international status, have enjoyed notable successes against Test-playing nations in global competitions in recent years. Ireland, who are 12th in the ICC one-day rankings, beat England in the 2011 World Cup, four years after a shock victory over Pakistan in the same competition. Afghanistan, currently 10th in the rankings, drew an ODI series with T20 world champions West Indies this month.

Mellawa’s Inside/Outside View of Sri Lankan Cricket

Andrew Fidel Fernando, reviewing Ranjan Mellawa’s Wind Behind the Willows… for ESPNcricinfo, http://www.espncricinfo.com/story/_/id/21203302/ranjan-mellawa-winds-willows

First, allow me to lay out a bias: I was probably always going to like this one. Sri Lanka does not, alas, produce a wealth of cricket books. Where Ben Stokes already has a hardcover in circulation, Muttiah Muralitharan is yet to flog a 400-page grievance – the likes of which have recently become the prerogative of so many retired cricketers. (And of endured hardships, who could possibly have a greater store than Murali?)

Aravinda’s Thoughts on the Present World Order in Cricket

Item in Daily Mirror, 10 August  2017

Cricket mentor Aravinda de Silva has said the Indian cricket team derives its strength from the Indian Premier League (IPL), the Hindustan Times reported today.    “The IPL has helped them (Indian players) in playing against the best players in the world. They are able to bring in all the international players because of the monetary capability of the Indian cricket board. They all bring in the best knowledge into one country because all the best coaches are there in one competition. Continue reading

Murali’s Newest Milestone

Murali is flanked by Ranjit Fernando, Angelo, Malinga and other Sri Lankan cricketers after receiving his Hall of Fame emblem.

If feasible readers should take in the moment he was inducted and listen to Michael Atherton, Sangakkara and other dignitaries reflect on Murali’s career. As momentous was the interview given by Younis Khan after  he was honoured in England a few days back. One question was this: “who was the most difficult bowler you faced?” … Immediate answer: “murali” … with elaboration following.

Media Madness in Sumathipala

Andrew Fidel Fernando,  in ESPNcricinfo, 19 April 2017, where the title runs Why is SLC in public-relations overdrive?”  … and the by-line urns: “Thilanga Sumathipala’s board has done as much for Sri Lanka’s cricket as any other, but the chairman’s desperation for the limelight does them no favours;”

Five men stand in front of the sponsors’ backdrop at the presentation that follows Sri Lanka’s T20 win over Bangladesh. Four of them are holding cheques; the man who holds nothing is Thilanga Sumathipala, SLC president and unelected deputy speaker of the House. He stands closest to the presenter, and his presence seems gratuitous at first. When proceedings begin, however, it becomes clear that the camera is smitten with Sumathipala and that he is smitten with it. When Kusal Perera comes up to be interviewed about his Player-of-the-Match performance, there Sumathipala is, looking paternally over the player’s shoulder with a benevolent grin. While other awards are being handed out, the camera may stray, but as if bound by fate, it always has a way of finding its way back to Sumathipala. It captures his coy smirks and his firm handshakes.  Continue reading
