Sri Lanka’s Crazy Unimaginable Performances

Andrew Fidel Fernando, in ESPNcricinfo, where the title reads

I = The Test series win in South Africa

Kusal Perera, who had only made one previous century against Zimbabwe, produced one of the most spectacular Test innings of all time as Sri Lanka chased down 304 for victory. But as ridiculous as that innings from this player was, the remainder of that series was no less outlandish. Dimuth Karunaratne had been thrown the captaincy just days before the Durban Test, following Sri Lanka’s nightmare tour of Australia, in which a small hospital’s worth of Sri Lanka players were injured. Thanks to those injuries, Sri Lanka’s frontline attack consisted of a spinner on debut, and two fast bowlers who had played fewer than five Tests. Sri Lanka’s most reliable batsman, Angelo Mathews, was also missing thanks to injury. Continue reading

Selection Headaches for T20 Tour of Australia

Michael Roberts

There are some headaches that one welcomes. The magnificent performances generated by a raw Sri Lankan T20 squad in Pakistan this month is one such headache. Ashantha De Mel and Co are to be congratulated for their selections and for expanding the problems by giving fresh faces the chance to impress in the third ODI.

Day Two in Galle …. Wickets Tumble

Danny Byrene’s Report: “The rain stays away as 12 wickets fall in the day to leave the match nicely balanced”

Most batsmen go through a period in their careers when they can’t score runs as easily as before, though in Steven Smith’s case it required a piece of sandpaper and a nine month ban to produce the equivalent effect. Ross Taylor went through a lean period in 2018 when he only managed 277 runs from 12 innings at 23.08. His current average is 47.31 having stormed back into form with a double century against Bangladesh at the Basin Reserve in March of this year. He has scored Test centuries against all the competing sides excluding Ireland and Afghanistan with the exception of South Africa. This morning he was hoping to add to his tally of 18 centuries resuming his innings on 86 not out. Play began 15 minutes early to make up for the 22 overs lost to the weather the previous day. Taylor was caught behind off the first ball he faced, a warm-up delivery from Lakmal that he tried to cut behind square leg ( 205 – 6 ). Santner was lbw to Lakmal twenty minutes later not offering a shot ( 216 – 7 ) and Southee took this as a cue to try to hit some sixes. He smashed Dananjaya over long-on despite a fielder being stationed there and was then comically run out from first slip three balls later not realizing where the ball had gone ( 222 – 8 ).

Andrew Fernando evaluates Sri Lanka’s Prospects

Andrew Fidel Fernando, in ESPNcricinfo.com, 13 August 2019, where the title is England whitewash forced us to rethink plans for New Zealand Tests – Dimuth Karunaratne”

Sri Lanka may have whitewashed South Africa in February, but their most recent Test series at home brought a 3-0 defeat at the hands of England. Though the hosts’ spinners were expected to dominate the England batsmen, the opposition top order batted aggressively, and found ways to put up daunting totals.

Avishka Fernando’s Breakthrough Ton

Rex Clementine, in Island, 2 July 2019, where the title is “Avishka goes past Kohli and Tendulkar as third youngest World Cup centurion”

Young batting sensation Avishka Fernando has made an impact with cameos against Australia and South Africa in the ICC Cricket World Cup from the moment he was given a break at the expense of Lahiru Thirimanne. On Monday, he converted a start against the West Indies into a match winning knock posting a less than run a ball century. Aravinda de Silva was 30 when he made a World Cup hundred while Sanath Jayasuriya was 33 and that makes Avishka’s achievement a remarkable one.

Sri Lanka’s Avishka Fernando plays a shot during the 2019 Cricket World Cup group stage match between Sri Lanka and West Indies at the Riverside Ground, in Chester-le-Street, northeast England, on July 1, 2019.

Sri Lankan Players wary of The Glare

Sa’adi Thawfeeq, in Daily News, 17 June 2019, with this title “Manager defends players’ no-show at media conference”

Sri Lanka manager Ashantha de Mel has defended his players for not turning up for the official post-match press conference after their World Cup defeat against Australia at the Oval here on Saturday. It is the norm at all ICC conducted tournaments for a player to be present for the pre and post match media conferences, but after Sri Lanka had thrown away a golden chance of beating world champs Australia no member of the team presented himself at the conference which reflected badly on the losing side.

“What can you do when no one wanted to go to the press conference? The players were so deflated after letting go off such a golden opportunity to post a win they were not prepared to go and face further questions and be humiliated,” said De Mel.

Sri Lanka’s Cricket Dissected

Sidharth Monga, in ESPNcricinfo, 16 June 2019, where the title reads Dysfunction, hope, more dysfunction; Sri Lanka’s World Cup rolls on”

The wife of Sri Lanka’s once-captain has accused – on Facebook – one of their players of being a political appointment made by the sports minister of the country. That captain – one of the seven ODI captains tried by Sri Lanka since the last World Cup – is not the captain anymore. He has been accused of picking and choosing games, and has been forced to switch between IPL and domestic cricket in Sri Lanka, and is eventually here at the World Cup. Barely.

Even-Stevens between Afghanistan and Sri Lanka?

Ankur Dhawan, in ESPNcricnfo, 3 June 2019, where the title is   “Can improving Afghanistan exploit Sri Lanka’s vulnerabilities?”

Bookmakers are offering near-equal odds on the Sri Lanka-Afghanistan contest in Cardiff, and although there was no way of calling this four years ago, when Sri Lanka were contenders until being blown away by South Africa in Sydney, things are a little different now, especially after their walloping at New Zealand’s hands last week. And don’t forget what happened last year, when Afghanistan knocked Sri Lanka out of the Asia Cup.

Stand Steadfast Together: Cricket’s Message to Sri Lanka and FOR Sri Lanka

Nuwan Ranasinghe, in The ROAR, 29 May 2019, where the title is “What Cricket Really means to Sri Lanka”

Contrary to popular belief, cricket has never actually been viewed as a religion in Sri Lanka. Whilst Sri Lankans do love their cricket, they are not essentially a cricket-mad people as is so often stereotypically coined by the Western media. Decades of civil war, a devastating tsunami, soul-destroying floods, monsoon rains and now this latest terror bombing has reminded Sri Lankans that there certainly are more important things in life than a simple game of cricket.
